I recently purchased a second hand 1994/1995 C36 AMG from a second-hand car dealer here in Hong Kong. However, I am having doubts (probably out of paranoia) as to its authenticity. Short of taking my car to my local Mercedes dealer to have it check out, is there any way of checking the authenticity of my C36? I have the following doubts:

1) I did a VIN check on this website and the result was my C36 is in fact a 2002 C280
2) There is no AMG logo on the speedometer (although this can be simply cosmetic or the previous owner changed it - the current speedo uses mph which leads me to believe this is probably a UK/England import into Hong Kong. It should't be a Japanese car cuz they use kmh in Japan albeit r.h.drive)
3) There is no silver AMG badge on the front lip of the front skirt. Mine is simply a black decal/etching of AMG (again this is simply cosmetic). Maybe the silver badge I've seen on other C36's was a cosmetic addition.
4) The door sills don't have the AMG logo etched onto the silver strip.

My car does have a 3.6 litre AMG engine.

I'm not too concerned about the cosmetic additions/subtractions as above. My main worry is that the VIN check I did did not return the result I wanted.

I'm just scared it turns out I've bought a C280 with a C36 engine fitted in. In which case, the dealer has totally misrepresented the car as a genuine C36 AMG. However, the vehical registration document lists my car as a C36 AMG.

Any help with this will be most appreciated!

I think you have a lot of problems and maybe a dodgy car altogether...
IF the VIN check returned a 2002 280, there is the problem. In 2002 the 280 was not an option in the C, and in 2002 it would have been a W203 body...
Many of the cars stolen here are 'rung' and shipped out to you - maybe this is one, or your check was flawed.
Suggest you try again to verify. What is the log book history?

The silver badge was correct. It was only on the 36 and dropped on the 43.
Have a look at the car pic on the thread above this one. That is what your 36 should look like - it has the correct badge.

The little badges cost about £20 over here. If your car was rung, then they maybe kept the badges and sills to make a few extra pounds..

Thanks for the info.

What exactly do you mean by "rung"? You mean like patched up from bits of cars here and bits of cars there?

I don't think I got a log book with my C36! But I'll double check...

My vehicle documents say it's manufactured in 1994 and was first registered in February 1995. Which means it was first imported and registered in Feb 1995.

I got my VIN number from under the driver's seat etched into the chassis.

Just an update:

I called Mercedes Benz Hong Kong today and I inquired as to my VIN number and engine number. Yes, the VIN and engin number both refer to a 1994/1995 C280 but this is apparently normal. MB does not specifically make alternative VIN/engine numbers for their AMG cars. The only way to tell the difference, say between a C280 and C36 is by the engine (and not from the cosmetic bits and bobs on the exterior).

Although a C36 engine is a bored out and "tweaked" C280 engine, MB does not give the engine/VIN number a different coding. The base engine block is a 2.8l engine. Once they make it into a 3.6l AMG engine, the engine number stays the same, hence the VIN/engine number will continue to reflect a C280 model. If my car has a 3.6l engine then 99.9% it is an AMG car. It is apparently extremely rare for people to buy a C280 and retrofit with a 3.6l engine.

Conclusion: VIN numbers and engine numbers do not in themselves tell you whether your car is an AMG or regular version.

Further, MB folks said that if I could give them my VIn and engine number, then my car is not a pieced up car from bits and pieces.

At least now I can rest with some peace of mind!

I think the VIN number tracker on this website is only valid for US.
I am not sure if the validity applies to other country such as Hongkong or UK.

In US market if C36 will have record as C36 based on the VIN number.
There is no C36 in the US to date that has a VIN# as a c280.
This should prevent any fraud of claiming C36 when it fact the car started out as a c280 as there is big discrepancy on the value of 2 different car

As far as I been told that to make C36 Mercedes only send the chassis and the body shell to the AMG plant without any engine in it, then AMG put the 3.6L engine (modified 2.8L to 3.6L)
Then AMG put bigger brakes, exhaust, tranny, suspension+wheels, and Body kit.

Now I am not saying your car is not a genuine C36, but the while VIN number rules might be different
If I were you I'd contact AMG Gmbh to validate the VIN number, after all they should have record of all VIN number for all accounted C36 ever come out of the factory and sold.

Hi, this info might help

I have a 1996 UK spec C36 and the additional cosmetic bits on a C36 are as follows:

front spoiler (mine does not have an AMG badge)
side skirts
rear apron
AMG twin exhaust pipes - rectangular
C36 AMG badges on boot lid
AMG badge on engine
3.6 letters moulded onto underbonnet part
17 inch AMG alloys with AMG embossed on wheel spoke
printed carbon fibre look on BC pillar
printed carbon fibre look in interior - centre console, doors, back of the facia
AMG logo on Speedo
C36 embossed on grey and black gear selector
Grey instrument binnacle surround
black leather steering wheel with lower part of wheel rim in grey leather - colour matches the instrument surround
sport seats with perforated leather

if your car has all these then at least it looks like a real C36.

Best regards,
Mr Singh

Update folks.

Today, I received written confirmation (by regular post) from DaimlerChrysler AG in Stuttgart that my C36 is a genuine C36.

Here is what they say:

"Thank you for your email of September 7, 2003.

Your Mercedes-Benz bearing the VIN WDB 202028 2F 175027 is a C36 AMG.

The basis for the C36 AMG is the C280 in the equipment line "Sport"

The 6-cylinder engine, bored and stroked to an additional 800cc, was carefully assembled by hand by a team of qualified AMG specialists. In addition your vehicle was equipped with an AMG styling backage which includes a front apron with auxiliary headlamps, side skirts and a rear apron.

We hope that this information fully answers all your questions and wich you safe and pleasant driving with your Mercedes C36 AMG.

Yours sincerely
DaimlerChrysler AG

Wolff Mogle"

At least I have peace of mind now!

Thanks to all who contributed to this forum. Cheers!

I think it is the same on all UK C36`s, when you go to the dealer, it comes up on their computers as a C280 with AMG styling\sports upgrade, so your chassis # (or vin #) will show c280. this is normal and nothing to worry about!

I have enjoyed reading through this topic , as I have a W124 E36 AMG saloon which shares the 3.6 engine with the C class. From all the research I have done on my car it would seem it started life as an E320 before AMG got to work on it.

My car started life in Jersey in 1995 and I believe only 14 saloons were made ( all in right hand drive for export ).Cabriolets , Estates and Coupe were made in left hand drive and right hand drive .

Whilst driving up to London yesterday I was passed by a C36 in the same blue black as mine and despite both our cars being 8 yrs old they were the best motors for miles !

how to tell c36

It is all in the VIN. You could also go to www.carfax.com and type in the VIN. It will give you the history of the car. I would highly recommend to anyone about using that site if you are buying a used car. I don't work for this company or get any kick back for it. But it saved me tons of headache buying my c36.
