the seller did not want to misrepresent the car as an sl55 and thats why it is advertised as a sl500

still, that is a good price for a somewhat rare silver sl1 and sl2 package

if silver is your color you may wait another six months or longer before you find a 99-2002 with those same options

I think it is a sweet looking car in need of a bit of leather repair. The AMG package sets it off nicely and worthy of wearing the AMG badge. I think the mileage and price looks good, it's ex lease/rental car so history should be right. It is also finished in 744 Brilliant Silver, which we all know is the Fastest SL colour. :grin.

I would give it some consideration, but would also swap the SL55 badge back to a Sl500. just my 2c

Call a dealer and have the vin checked. The bumpers were changed after the car was built and the part numbers start with WA129-885- etc. But I have worked at a dealer for 15 years and have never heard of a real 129 "SL55". They had standard SL500 badging with the AMG badge on the back and the body cladding.

Why do you think the bumpers were changed? That's a 99 MY when the last facelift happened so it is my understanding that those bumpers are correct.

The R129 SL55 does exist but less than 100 were built so it's not surprising that one never rolled through your service department even if you were there 15 years.

I don't think the R129 AMGs were ever officially imported to the US. Too much trouble passing emissions laws for the anticipated numbers to be sold.

Not talking about just body cladding, of course.

I do remember being in Berlin in 1992 - seeing an AMG SL - at the dealership on the Kufurstendamm - we aren't talking about MB of Elephant's Breath, mind you - the 'Kudamm" is Berlin's 5th Ave & Park Ave rolled into 1 -

Anyway that AMG was priced at around $200,000. I want to say it was the SL70 but did they have the V12 then?

Don't have a picture of the dealership and the car but here is the "Kudamm"

i believe the v12 began production in 1993 but that is for the U.S. maybe Europe had them a year earlier im not really sure.

i know and i realize this seems like a waste of time determining weather a car priced at $10,500 and advertised as an sl500 is an sl55 but like i say, i was asking not only about this car but to learn how to recognize them in the future which i believe i did thanks to some very helpful information given. the ebay listing expired and i found this posted on craigslist the other day 1999 Mercedes SL - asking $2,500 more than the buy it now. ill be going by houston in a couple of days and if he would still accept an offer close to $10k i may end up buying it after all but im not going to get my hopes up. thanks again to all who helped me out you guys are the best.
