On my 1999 ML, I want to relace the drivers window opener swich. How would i be able to get the current switch out. I have tried by taking the middle compartment out-the black lining to get the switch out but have only been able to get to the wiring on the bottom. if anyone has done this before and knows how to get it out, could they tell me? thanks

I just replced mine to day, it took me 30 minutes including vaccuming under the console:)
here i hope this will help you to DIY.
First, take the small rubber mat just right in front of the shiffter, you can lift it up by your finger.

Second. pull out the shift knob and take the surround case.

since you already take the bucket out, you can simply push the wood console from under. I wish I have a camera so i can explain a little better.

After lifting the wood console you can easily see the wiring harness of the switch as well as the harness for the cigarettes lighter. There are 5 different size of connector, connected to the switch but you can't go wrong they are different sizes.

After removing all the harness you take the old switch by unsnapping the 4 tabs two in front and 2 at the back, replace with the new one reconnect the harness test it before you put the console back, to make sure it working. thats it and your done.

how would I be able to take the shift knob off? do you have to unscrew the bottom of the knob and pull up on it? and also on the surrounding case, is that snapped into place or is it screwed in.

The surround is snapped in, so just pull up. The knob is unscrew just beneath the leather and pull knob straight up.

Once you do it once it's a 3 minute job the next time.

MB tech doesn't even bother with the gearshift stuff and just pulls the box, pushes up from underneath and loosens enough to see the switches, unplug, plug snap down screw in and done. 3 minutes, but he did use a power screw driver.
