I now see that my fuel filter is connected on both ends, so it's not obvious which end to remove first.

What is the way to replace it without damaging anything?

I have seen archived advice to have a collector for fuel spray, but not anything about which side to loosen up.

Also, here's a picture of the stuff by the filter.

What are the other two objects? Is the one on the right the accumulator?

Do you think I should clean the one on the left? Since it seems to be working, I'm a little paranoid about messing with it.

(I love my digicam)

You are correct about the accumulator and the one on the left is the fuel pump. Don't worry about cleaning the fuel pump and be sure you have new seal washers for the install.

P/S I sugest tieing a shop rag aroud each wrist to stop the gas from going down your arms.[;)]
