I want to get a better look at the engine on my 2009 E350. I see that the front half cover just pops off. The rear half has a spring bail at the back, but after unsnapping that, it still wasn't obvious to me how to remove the cover. Didn't want to force anything.
Also, where are safe locations to lift the car with a floor jack so I can place jackstands under the jacking points and examine the underside.
Who prints a good shop manual for the modest DIY activities (oil change, brake pads etc)?

Once you've undone the bail, just lift off the back half (with a little, harmless effort).

Mercedes are not designed for use of floor jack or jackstands, although the following tool is handy for floor jack use at the jack points (leaving still no place for jackstands):
