The following applies to COMAND 2.0 (NTG 2) units with MHI phone systems. We would appreciate feedback from owners of COMAND 2.5 (NTG 1) and later COMANDs.

The following explains how to display the proper icon (home, cellular, or office) icon for persons having multiple numbers, and to do so without the annoying conflict and duplication of numbers that members have complained of, especially when using a Bluetooth cell phone. The process is necessary because the your cell phone contacts, COMAND phone book, and the voice control module memories are each separate.

For your convenience, at the end of this post there is a pdf file for download that contains the information from the first two posts in this thread.

First, pair your cell phone and allow your cell phone’s phone book (contacts list) to load (you will see “Now Downloading” at the bottom of the screen if you have selected “TEL” on COMAND). See photo 1.

Second, once the phone book download is complete, select the phone book soft key (the phone book icon on the left of the “TEL” screen, shown in photo 2). This brings up the screen shown in photo 3, which displays the phone contacts list that has been downloaded, and a soft key labeled “NEW.”

Third, select the “NEW” soft key as shown in photo 3.

Fourth: You will then be shown a choice of the icon – Cell, Work or Home (it may read Cellular, Office, Home on some COMANDS) - for the number you would like to input (Photo 4). Select one (using COMAND up/down arrows and “OK” below the keypad).

Fifth, input the name and then the number in the resulting menu using the COMAND keypad to the right of the COMAND screen (photo 5).

Some important NOTES:
*** a. All names and numbers must be input on the COMAND; they will not automatically transfer from your phone into this menu.
*** b. When in this mode if you do not want to have a duplicate number in your phone and in your cars head unit, put the name and number exactly as it is in your phone. That is, if you have a 1 before the number in the phone, make sure you put the 1 in front of the number when making the entry in this menu. If it doesn't have a 1 in front of the number then make sure it doesn't have the 1. This is especially important for the phone number.
***c. You can vary the name information from your phone’s contacts name if you wish, but use the same name for each person for whom you are entering separate numbers. That is, if entering 3 numbers for "John" be sure to use the name "John" for all 3 numbers.
***d. When making the entries, it will help you to keep your phone open to the person and number you are entering and put it in as you visually see it.
***e. I found it easiest to enter the name I wished to use in voice dialing (discussed below) in the surname block.

Sixth, once you have done the name and number entry, push the OK button (shown in photo 5 above). Now, using the steps beginning with pressing the “NEW” soft key, enter the additional numbers for the same individual (again, be sure to use the same surname for the same individual). As a suggestion, once you have completed the multiple entries for the first person, check your phone book listings; they should display the person’s name, and the icons with the proper number associated with each icon, on COMAND.

Last, go back and do the entire process over until you have everyone in your phone book entered into the head unit and make sure you have the correct icon for each number you input. Once that is done, your screen will show your correct icon next to the numbers associated with each name.

Now, we are ready for completing the process so that you can perform hands free voice dialing for each person for whom you have made the entries discussed above.

HOW TO ACCOMPLISH VOICE DIALING WITHOUT CONFUSING COMAND

Hands free dialing is done by pulling the stalk on the right side of the steering column. Your particular COMAND will show a list of acceptable voice commands, if you have set that option.

Then say: "Add name" (or “store name” or whatever your voice command help screen indicates). The VCM will say, " Name Please." You speak the name, it will ask you to repeat.

The VCM will then ask you for the number; speak the number digit by digit; as you speak, each digit will appear onscreen. When finished, say "Enter." (Note: some systems may proceed without your saying “Enter,” but proceed when you pause long enough. In addition, on occasion, the system may proceed before a number has been fully spoken; if this happens, say “Cancel” then start the procedure again).

The VCM will ask if it is for the option of Cellular, Office, or Home. You speak the choice and then the VCM will repeat the name in your voice and it will say, "Name stored.” If you have multiple numbers for that person, when you pull the stalk to make the call, you will say, Call "whoever;" the VCM will say back to you in your voice "whoever" and then ask you, "Cell, Office, Home" (depending on which entries you have for that person). You tell it which one and it will dial that number. The dialed number will show on both your COMAND screen in the center stack and in your instrument cluster. It may also show the name of the person you are calling, the call timer counter and the number.

When your call has ended push the button either on the steering wheel or the Command to End. It also will automatically hand up once the other party hangs up and will restore you back to your music.

Hope this helps, it took me forever to figure it out but I finally go it working.

Thank you for all your work exploring and creating this, John. Getting COMAND to properly show the home, cell and work icons beside multiple listings under one name has been a problem for many of our members for a long time. Sometimes, voice dialing has been problematic; when entries were made into the VCM, numbers would disappear under a person's name, and simply be grouped with no name at the bottom of a contacts list. Your procedures avoid these problems. I ran these steps through my '05 COMAND, and it works like a charm!

If owners of cars with other than the NTG 2 (COMAND 2.0) units and MHI phone systems find the procedures to be different, or if these steps can be confirmed for different COMANDs, I'm sure the members would like to know!

If your phone book won't download at all

If your phone book fails to download at all, it may be because your contact information is stored on its SIM card, and not in the phone's memory. The MB Bluetooth options for North America do not download information from the SIM card. If you are able, try changing the storage location, and see if the download occurs. Thanks and a tip of the hat to Kraut56 and 2006CL600. :goojob:

*PS -The instructions for transferring contacts should be in your phone's operating manual - For example: The iPhone 4S has a menu option to transfer contacts from the SIM card. I can confirm that because I have one, but I have no idea how other phones work.

Sorry, I didn't mention of mention that because some people do not have that ability on their phones. I would have mentioned it but was not sure how each persons phone works. I'm not a Smart Phone or PDA person. I like the old fashion phone. My thoughts are that I have a life and if I need someone, I can call and speak to them directly, not text and my life isn't in such a hurry that I can not wait until I get home and use my computer.

MB has proven themselves too smart for their own good, again. When I first got the Samsung Galaxy Note, the contacts downloaded. Then, at some point, the contacts stopped downloading. Now, I see PROCESSING for a long time; and when I get READY, there are no contacts in the system. Very frustrating that a $1000 for parts plus my labor to install system can't do what a $150 aftermarket radio in one of my other cars can do.

You don't tell us what system you installed, what year and model your car is, or how many contacts you are trying to download. Not much to go on to try to help.
