Guys i live in Europe with high gas charges and have just sold a mint '95 124 4matic 300E wagon with all extras including leather and 100k miles for $7K as it was costing me a fortune to fill her up and no one here wanted it.

Now I've been offered a 4 Speed manual 123 '79 240d wagon in goodish condition but with the usual cosmetic intrerior trim things to do for 1.5k OR a fairly basic 124 300D wagon (non turbo) with auto box and a/c in wonderful condition for $7.5. Why does my head keep saying take the 240D. Because it's more economical? or because I've already got a 124 320 cabrio and a 124 wagon seems too similar?

Any advice gratefully received. Am I right in thinking the 240D will need filling less often? [?]

Take the 240 wagon. The chassis rides better than the 124 and it is more economical in your neck of the woods with much less costs for maintainance over time.

Plus if you use it as a daily driver you will enjoy it more.

…but you’ll have no ABS or airbag. I’d take the 124D if she’s as nice as you say she is, the OM616 in the 240 can be tedious even with a manual and I don’t think the 300 will use much more fuel.

thanks - useful comments even if they're a bit contradictory! Is there a big difference in consumption between the 240D 4spd and 5spd box?
Thanks for replying.
