Hi

I have a 2007 A180CDI Auto. I love my car, but I get a message on the dash..."Transmission Fault Workshop"

I thought I would check that the transmission fluid was at a good level, because I really cannot afford to take the car into a workshop to be repaired, especially if they want to replace the gearbox.

Can someone please tell me how to find the correct place to check the fluid levels, and how to go about it?

Hi there, To check transmission oil level you would first need to buy the dipstick or "measuring tool" as Mercedes refer to it as it doesn't come factory fitted.

You would first need to get the vehicle on a level surface and carry out all safety precautions before starting vehicle. You then insert the dipstick fully in before removing and observing the reading on the scale. The first reading should be taken from the cold temperature marking.

You then start and leave car to run for some time or maybe drive around to bring the oil to a temperature of about 80 degrees (check marker to confirm temp) and then measure the oil the same way as before except this time you will be reading the oil level on the hot temperature marking on the dipstick scale. It is also recommended that after this stage you go through the gears on the shifter with car stationary before taking another reading, hope this helps.

The ATF fluid has to be checked with every service ie every 15,000km. Coolant has to be added at a ration of 70%water to 30% coolant to the radiator. After learning this to my detriment (car out of warranty and didn't even know about ATF fluid needing to be topped up or changed, thanks to mechanic for not knowing either or failing to mention it). I am not even using MB approved oils, but Ravenol products instead, which are 100% synthetic and therefore the correct thing to use for a CVT gearbox. Hope this helps a bit.
