I've been to plants in the USA (GM) and in South Korea (Hyundai, Daewoo=GM) and this level of automation is what keeps cars at low cost and of consistent build quality.
Tata in India recently released a car for US$6000 for the Indian doemstic market. China has one for about $8000. With that sort of competition, automation, integration, and lean production is a must to stay in business.
