2000? Safe, 2004? Safer. Seriously though, depending on what the criterea is of safety (active/passive) for you they have to meet some pretty lofty standard on their own as an MB.

My best friend got rear-ended by a HONDA Prelude (woman on a cellphone) and the Honda was totaled. He was not hurt and the SLK was easily repaired. I would say they are very safe.
