1979 230E imported from Germany by my friend in the Army. He wrecked it a year ago and it has been sitting in the driveway rotting ever since. I don't know how much rust there is, but they are asking a very fair price that I really can't pass up. It is a gasser, but it is a manual transmission with a kilometer speedometer! I've been wanting to learn body work..

$300.00. That's extensive body work (no matter what someone might say), and there may be parts on that car that cannot easily be had in the US. And aside from scattered enthusiasts, the car may never be worth a lot fixed for another 15 years or so. Even the older MB's (1960's) aren't very valuable from what I've seen.

If the bumpers and headlights are in good condition, they alone are worth $1000.

I see a new side panel, new door or doorpanel, and a new rear section (which is the most work; cutting the old one out and welding in a new one).

Say a month of "weekend work".

But, how much rust is there? If there is no or little rust it is worth the effort (it's never worth the money ;) ).

In my opinion a car in that state is only worth the prize a scrapyard would pay, but thats just what i think..
You do the owner a favor if you pay him 200$ and remove the car from his lot :)
Check the rest of the body for rust before taking on this project. The massive rubber protective coating under these cars can hide severe problems. Repacing that front right fender could be the least problem.
Off course this could make a nice car for you! Good luck with it! :D

that is a great deal of damage and the alignment might be off dramatically and when some specs are not adjustable on w123's, parts need to be replaced. that might be the case with the rear or front suspenion. but since it is a manual gasser, id say its worth quite alot still in its condition, close to 1k.
granted the interior and engine are above par condition.

The only problem I have had finding parts was for the catalytic converter, but my local mechanic & the MB dealer were able to find a suitable replacement. Most chassis/body parts are identical to any other 123, and most engine parts are identical to a 201 2.3ltr (excluding the FI - the 123 uses K-jet, the 201 uses KE-Jet) If it's a manual I'd go for it - those are really rare!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am definitely buying it. I will be getting it for a very good price indeed. I don't think there is a whole lot of rust on it and I think the headlights alone are probably worth more than I'm paying. It is too good to pass up!
Does anyone know if the fender is welded to the body? I currently have damage to the same part (though not as extensive) on my 240D and was thinking of pulling a clean one off a 280e in the local scap yard, but I don't know if it would fit.. Would say, and 85 300D fender fit a 79 280e etc?? I almost bought a body manual on ebay a few weeks ago, but that was before I hit the deer..

For a damaged car that old, maybe $200-300, $400 at the max. Also, depending on engine work, if it's got a rebuilt transmission all that.

wow. I got $2400 for my 240D when I hit a deer and there was not nearly as much damage as there is on this car. They say the car is not drivable - it looks like the front fender is rubbing against the tire. I just took off the same fender on my 240D (thanks dieselgiant) and it was fairly easy. This one is a bit mangled but it might at least free it up to drive once it is jumped. I haven't seen the car since it has been wrecked. I'm just waiting to find a truck/trailer/time/etc to go and get it. They already said it's mine!

I'd give up to $1000. It is a manual but that fact is dulled since the 2.3L and 5-speed combo is common as dirt in the 190E and the manual parts won't fit an OM61x or M110.

I went and looked at it and here are some photos. I thought he had said it was a 230E, but since it's not fuel injected, that just makes it a 230 right? Also, it has 242K kilometers on it which equals right around 150K miles. It is a 4 speed and has a fair amount of rust other than the damaged part. Interior is very clean - not a crack to be found on the dash. My friend said that it's running on 3 cylinders and the car has been sitting for a year since the day it died and was towed home. I think once I get it, I'll check the condition of the engine and from there figure out how to proceed. But for $200 who can pass it up right?
