Average low 20s, I have done as well as 26-27 on a long trip in warm weather.

It's not bad mileage, and certainly not as bad as the government website would have you believe- maxing out at 19 mpg. In fact, the government put a gas guzzler tax on the 300SE, and if you look at the fueleconomy.gov website, you'll notice the W126 was classified as a compact car....

Very decent mileage for a largish heavy car though.

So your car take 8.71 - 9.04 Liters on 100 km?
Btw, im swedish.

We don't use 26-27 mpg's system. We use "liter per Eu mile" system.
One mile is 10 km.

My car Volvo 740 GL takes 0.8 liter gas on 1 mile. Easily Calculating.

So your car takes between 0.87 and 0.9 liters per Swedish mile (10 km)?
That's good :)

Gas is very expensive here. It cost about $ 49 per gallon. And our cars takes about one liter per 10 km. How much does it cost for you?

LOL $49 per gallon:eek::D I think you got your calculations wrong.

1 mile = 1.6 kilometers, not 10;)

3.78 L = 1 gallon (US)

Well, remember I said average LOW 20s.... the upper number was on a highway trip.

So for normal driving it will be lower.

If I did the math correctly, that is going to amount to between 1.07-1.18 L/10km.

I don't want you to get your hopes up too much! It's not going to be quite as good as your 4 cylinder Volvo.

Do haven't read that i'm swedish?
One mile in sweden is 10 km.

ohh, sorry. I calculate that in Swedish money:rolleyes:. It is 6.8 dollars per gallon.

Surely a mile is sweden is the same distance as a mile anywhere else in the world, i.e. 1.6 km.

I usually get between 8 and 9L per 100km.

No, a mile in sweden is 10 km.
You have a manual transmission, but is it posible to install a w124 200 manual transmission into 300 SE? hard, easy? I just wondring :)

Manual takes less gas then automatic.

You are right .. the Scandinavian mile is different from the normal "mile". So 10KM is one Scandinavian mile.... not that I know all this .. I just wiki it since there is no way a mile as I know it is a lot longer in Sweden :) ...

How much gas does your 300 SE (M103 engine) take?
My 300SE -90 (automatic) takes 1.0 l / 10 km in highway, about 1.2 - 1.3 l / 10 km in mixed conditions (highway/town). Perhaps slightly more now in winter time here in Finland...but it is not the gas consumption that matters when owning / driving these cars, I think ! :)

That's strange! I suppose it's just like a gallon in the UK is different than a gallon in the US.

Not sure if it would be possible to put the manual box from a 200 W124 into a 300 W126 but if it is, it'll be difficult and expensive no doubt. It may very well not actually be physically possible. I've not heard of anyone doing it anyway. You'd be cheaper trying to buy a W126 manual, they are rare but I know there are always some for sale in Germany. More common over there. I've only seen one other 300SE in RHD here in the UK anyway.

Mine is a 5 speed so I do think it will take a bit less petrol than an auto, and I do prefer having the manual box, but it's all a matter of personal taste.

My 300SE, a 1988 model, will average 20mpg-ish around town and 26mpg on a run if I'm being very light footed. Of course these figures can vary massivly depending on how you drive- put your foot down and I'm sure you could slip into single figures :)

Hope this helps.

Hello

I am a new member and I apologise in advance for being so ignorant. I am seeking help and I hope somebody helps me.

I have just bought a 1989 300SE in NYC and the previous owner has no maintaneance manuals to show. The odometer states 180,225 and I just had the transmission leak fixed and the head repaired (My wife and I have not even have had the chance to drive the car and enjoy it as yet :( ) .

The previous owner said I should expect 15MPG in city and looking at this thread, everybody seems to have a much better average. How much MPG should I expect and what should I be doing to increase the average MPG?

Thanks for reading and all your help.

Cheers

haha I bought my 300se in NYC about 4 years ago now and had it shipped out to LA when I moved. Yeah I have a trans leak too and after a year of driving it I lost all gears except first. It sucks driving from Brooklyn to rockland county in first hahaha. But for 20 bucks I got a new trans filter and gasket and I haven't had a problem since (knock on wood) I don't know much, but everyone else here does, you will find a [email protected]!t load of info here, goodluck. Cheers
