just thought this would be an interesting topic, i am super picky about my car. I also am very hesitant about making long drives, putting on extra miles, wear and tear. Went golfing Sat and had a choice to either drive or ride with my buddy, he booked the tee time so I figured I guess I will drive..didnt really want to but did because I enjoy driving the car..it was about 45 minutes each way..had to valet the car, hate letting others even drive my car, do you guys valet? all in all i guess i wished I would have let him drive..i dunno maybe I am too meticulous...had to wipe the car down and clean it when we got back...how are you guys??

I don't valet park, but I have no worries about putting miles on the car. I mean it is not going into a museum after I am done with it. I think it is silly to own a depreciating asset (though a very fun one) and not enjoy it. Are you going to go to your grave wishing you had a car with only 50,000 miles instead of 60,000 miles? Hopefully not!

That being said, I do tend to avoid the short, high wear-and-tear, around town drives. 45 minutes to get to golf sounds just about right. :^)

Enjoy the car!

I understand the feeling of trying to "save" the car but you bought it to drive. That said I also avoid many short runs to the store etc... Valet fine. Yesterday I picked up my car from the upohlstery shop after having the door panels sprayed with paint. Seems previous owner tried some nasty cleaner to eliminate spots above arm rest. They look great now. My point here is that I wont use cleaner-just a little mild soapy water on the interior. I spent hours reading posts on this forum regarding detailing and I finally went to the guy who replaces leather seats and he said DO NOT use any of these cleaners. I will go with him. Getting back to thread sometimes it's hard not to be finicky with this car but I really love it. I am having a heluva time deciding whether or not to change transmission fluid. My SL 500 is 2003 with just 32000 miles. It's fine. MB use to say the trans is a sealed system and not to mess with it. Now they say 4 years or 40000 miles to change flluid. It aint broke so I wont think about changing fluid at least until 50000 miles.

I also use a leaf blower to dry it after washing, just to avoid the unlikely event that the drying cloth leaves microscopic scratches from the cotton.

The neighbors probably think I'm a loon.

I drive it like a rental every day. These cars must be driven hard or they break :).

So what are you saving it for, the next owner? Are you afraid you will loose money or that it will fall appart? I'm wondering what causes such irrational behavior toward an inanimate object.

Drive it like you stole it !

Agreed, I am about 600 miles away from booking 150,000 (ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND) miles on my 2003. I'm trying to get the Mercedes Mileage badge quick, I have put 3,000 miles on it in two months. LOL I drove this thing across 5 states last month. why the hell not?

Anyone else have a higher mileage SL500 ?

(Photo was taken a few days ago ... )

Life is too short, and the road too long, to drive anything less than a Mercedes Benz !

What kind of car do you drive? The only think I am worried about when I valet are my 20" wheels. But I also drive an E500, its pretty difficult to do something really dumb. Other than that I never let anyone eat, touch buttons, put fingerprints on my doors when they get out, or smoke (except for me, I do all those except get my prints all over it). I sure as hell dont let anyone else drive it, unless im too drunk. Thats a new thing since my dui lol.

I drive Both my cars plenty. The SL55 rule is no food. But other than that its ment to be enjoyed. I dont mind the good Valet guys. I do worry about some of the younger ones that will park it over a concrete Parking Monster and damage my prestine front Air Dam.
I keep both cars garaged. Only time they are outside is at work normally unless on the road.
Been driving my CL500 to Vegas often. Its getting a liitle warn with 109K miles now. But overall these cars DO need to be driven regularly. Its not a Ferrari for gods sake. Drive it and enjoy on a regular basis.

I have a few exotic show cars and show car Chevy, and the neighbors just scratch their head as they pass by and I am polishing the nuderside and suspension components on those. Then I got my SL600 RENNE for a nice driver to work and am finding I am getting a little fussy with that too, but not as bad as with the collector cars. For instance, my grill was looking a little faded, so I began working on that and there was quite a difference (see 1/2 on the left of the photo I was working on compared to the right). It didn't really look bad at a distance, but now that it is all worked on, it really looks better. I found with collector cars what sets them off are the little unnoticable things, and they all add up in the end to make the car stand out. However compared to collector cars which I am a little more fussy, I love driving this almost every day and not afraid to push it, like today blowing the doors off a new Vette...I bet he crapped his pants to see an MBZ out-accelerate him, and I almost did too.

I've heard somewhere that it is a very bad idea to use a leaf blower on a car. The air ain't clean and you are throwing all that dust at your car at over 200mph, unless it is specially designed for it with the air filter inside. Clean microfiber towels are the best.
