I have a friend at school who's offering me an '83 240d for 2,000 dollars. He says the car has 346k miles on it and is in very good condition. How much longer should I expect the engine to last? I'll probably be driving it for the most part around town, at the most around 30 highway miles or so.

If oil has been changed religiously every 3,000 miles,

the car should still have a lot of life left. When it's started, does the oil pressure gauge still peg at "3" when the car is started? Does it smoke or use too much oil? These cars are nearly permanent if maintained. Oil pressure, consumption are clues to engine health. A compression check would also tell you how it's doing. Good luck - I have an '83 also, and love it!
