Great work....!!!

Ed A.

P.S.

Can you post some pix of your rear wheel arches?
Side view, front view, rear view..
I've purchased a set of steel Porsche 911SC flares for "cheap"...want to see close up what an original widebody looks like so I can get it as close to original look as possible !!

will do ed, i will take a video at the weekend for you, the site dont like my cameras photos.

the thing that you will struggle with is the skirt below the side moldings, i'm not sure if there are any around you could buy and modify to look simerler, also to get the correct look the moldings on the wing, door and quarter should all be straight, not buldging out at the ends.

when you look down the car the wing and quarter pieces are at a tangent to the one on the door, i'll do my best to get some good shots for you.

hears a link to the two seats fitted, they are amazing, i am over the moon with them

YouTube - recaro c classic fitted in mercedes 320 amg twin turbo.
I just picked up the 911SC rear skirting which matches the wheel arch flare.
The price for everything ( under $200 ) I can probably cut, hammer, weld and blend until I get something that looks almost correct.
Much less expensive then trying to build an arch from new.

You did a great job on the seats...video very instructive !!!

thanks ed, i wish i could phsically help you with the arches, i will have to make do with pics and encoragement!

well said pifcat,
i think the main plus for my method, aside from cost, was not raising the seats, my driver seat lowers front and back, but the passanger only lowers front, if the seat was any higher, head room would be a problem.

Ed, when i said skirting, i didnt mean the bumper covers, i ment the skirts that run down the side of the car, covering the sills.

as far as the rear bumper cover goes, i am convinced that a sl 129 one will fit straight on with little or no mods, i have looked at them before and i think amg used one for the mold for my rear bumper, the front cover will be easy, just split the cover on the curve each side, and flare it out to match( i assume you will use 500e wings?) and glass it.

are you gonna be doing the job yourself, or using a body shop?

On the "skirting" we're talking about the same thing.

I'll do the layout and thinking work then get a body shop to do the cutting and welding and paint.

I'm curious to see if your car does not bulge out as much as the Hammer widebody .

when you say hammer widebody, i assume you mean 124 not 126? if yes (124) then i have seen three others in photos, and they all look very simerler to mine, i think the front wings were hand made, ie std wings cut and an arch piece grafted on, and so all look slightly different, but the rear quarters were pressed as a whole piece, the flaring starts from the door jam, comes out, then the lip for the arch, then gradully goes back in and ends at the rear quarter joint. if you look from above, the car looks like an X.

by the way, there is a guy from uk, who posts on this fourum, who has a pair of wings and a pair of quarters, but no "kit" ie skirts, bumpers ect. when i pulled my kit off to weld/ repair the jacking points, i was going to make molds of the kit, so i could build another, but didnt due to wanting to get her back together before other things cropped up, and it would have been left to rot!

i will try to rig up some referance points and take some mesurements on the video for you to get as much detail as possible! i'm quite excited, i think the other coupe by barnstormer is fantasticly done, and looks good, but it is not atall true to the original lines. you should try to make the back flares flow out then back in.

i think the best starting point for somebody tring to get the original look would be sl129 rear quarters and rear bumper, i've often looked at them from the rear, and they do look simerler to mine,

i recon if you use porche flares, it will be able to be made simerler to original, hell, if you do it right, it could even look better, are the porche ones you got 80's style 911 turbo wide body arches?

I'm going to start with these rear flares ( almost a full 1/4 panel ) cut from a 1991 Porsche 911SC that was converted to a Turbo widebody.

The SC arches are not as severe as the Turbo widebody.

They should arrive next week and I'll be able to get a better idea of if they will work.
The wheel arch shape seems like they should fit the Merc body.

Ed

These pieces will blend the rear of the Porsche flare to my lower rear cladding.
Will have to be shortened and glassed to the Merc cladding.

ed, when i look at the arches you have chosen, and think of the type of porche they are from, i get an impression of what your car may look like, i think you will have the look simerler to my other favorite car... the original mk1 escort mexico rally car driven by rodger clark in the 70's. i always wanted a mk1 rs2000 with the bubble arches, they were amazing.

i think mabe you should not try to hard to get the exact original look, it will be really hard, and i doubt you will be sucsessful, but you could build the next evolution of what the yellow saloon by socal started, and then barnstormer did, by flareing the arches like barnstormers car, but leaving the lower cladding straight, you will get a sort of original look, but more pronounced, if you get me?

i really wish i could be there to help. its gona look amazing, i just get the feeling you are about to start something that everybody is gona talk about for ever! i'm going to my mums now to get the video for you! will post tonight.

Thanks Nick

I attempted to contact Albert at Socal but got no response.
I also looked a Vitt in Japan and Goeckel in Germany that had 500E fender extensions.

Trying to stay away from fiberglass or non metallic.
Prefer metal that can be better shaped to the 124 contour.

Before I do anything I intend to duct tape the flares to the body.
Take pix from all angles and then mentally lay out what must be done to get decent fit.

I agree that a stamped part looks much better then trying to fabricate the flare as you are starting with a good shape.

I think the end result will be similar but not have as much of a wide bulge above the arch like the Escort.
I could probably cut down to the beginning of the top of the flare to fit.

It will take time, but should be worth it...

Ed

hears a vid ed, keep us posted!

YouTube - 320 amg coupe twin turbo, needs paint.

hows the mbc goin? how high have you gone?
Nick

Much thanks !!!

I want to try to get it as close to what you have as possible...your 320CE is not as extreme as the Hammer widebody in the AMG museum display

Still playing with the MBC...around 8 pounds now...been raining so really can't road test.

I pulled all the intake and boost tubing off and see no signs of oil blow by.
Just in case with higher boost I installed a small instrument air filter/seperator in the line to the airbox.
Will monitor it to see if it collects any oil.

i have seen that picture before, and i am 100% sure that the kit is the same, i think that because my car is white, and not shiny, the rear arches dont look as pronounced on the video/pics. i am going to paint the car with a pearl white paint that was a std colour on renault 5 gt turbos back when. not with the horrid purple that everyone is using on jap monsters these days, it has green flip, but only mild, i am sure the contrast in the paint will show the flare to its max. as far as fronts go, i am sure they were all hand built, and that one does look to be highter up the wing than mine. the shine on the paint makes the kit stand out, it looks brill! i am taxing the car on wed(1st of the month) then i need to find thsat boost! then i will check everything over, drive it for about a month, and then paint shop is callin, there are a couple of shows i wanna take her to this summer, its been a long time commin, but will definatly be worth it!

The wide body kit was available as a complete package, although none of the early AMG catalogs showed sku numbers. I had previously thought these were one off designs made specifically for each vehicle when a customer ordered them, but that appears to not have been the case.

You could not order these kits in the USA, so it was a euro only option (did not show up in euro AMG catalogs either, go figure), but there is at least one kit around in the UK that is uninstalled, which I have seen pictures of.

You're on top of the list of CE owners that have done a lot of work to their rides. BtW, I like the SLR tornado or cyclone wheels!
