Heres a thought: Is it worth it to buy Regular(89) gasoline and add an octane booster? (For the sake of saving $) //Also for the lack of interesting topics lately
I was filling up the tank today and a thought came over me. The Premium(91) fuel we put in our beloved W140s is usually about $0.20 more than Regular. So, pumping 25 gallons of Premium would cost $5 more than if you had pumped 25 gallons of Regular. Theoretically, you can pump Regular and add an octane booster to compensate for difference between Premium and Regular. I saw some generic branded octane boosters going for about $1.80-$2.25, which treats 25 gallons of fuel. So, if you pumped 25 gallons of Regular, added an octane booster for ~$2.00, you could save yourself ~$2.50 at the pump.
This comes with some assumptions though. The bottle does not specifically say how effective the octane booster is, in other words, how much would it boost the octane rating? Question here is whether or not it will be boosted to at least 91 octane rating (to compensate). The other question is whether or not the fuel in the tank is effectively "boosted". I'm sure the bottle of octane booster doesn't instantaneously boost the whole tank as you drive away from the gas station, so theres that issue too. The next assumption is that the difference between Premium and Regular is solely the octane rating. The last question is, is it even worth it to consider this method to save literally a couple of bucks (granted the octane solution is just as effective as filling up premium)?
