How do you guys feel about a 500SL with no service records because "brother in law knows to fix this car"? Never failed smog according to CARFAX.
1990 Mercedes 500SL

Even at the full requested price, should I even go to view it?

no records, that's a big gamble. i would take a look at it. hear it run make sure the soft top works and then if you really do like it see if you can bring it to a mechanic just to look it over. that's what i did before i got my car. about $250 dollars but worth it because there can be stuff wrong you just cant tell unless you know these cars well.

If it looks that good up close and has a fairly clean pre purchase inspection, I'd be all over it like a wet blanket !

From a half-empty-glass+113K-mile+not-familiar-with-that-ModelYear point of view.
"brother in law knows to fix this car"
Is the reason for selling because "brother in law doesn't want to fix it anymore"? or brother sees something notgood coming?
Is passing smog check a strong selling point to advertise?
Is it normal with older mechanical odometer when the digits don't look straight compared to the odometer of a similar model?

From a half-full point of view.
In pictures, it looks cleanly good.

Even though it's advertised as "CLEAN, NO MECHANICAL PROBLEM. COLD AC, WELL MAINTAIN ", reserve $750-$2K for unknown/unanticipated maintenance/repairs during ownership.

Passing smog + never failing a smog is a VERY strong point. I had issues with smog before and it can go in the 1000s, and in 2 years repeat... and in 2 more repeat...

It bothers me that he put "sold as-is". I mean, you generally can't return a car bought from private party on CL, so why specifically point it out? He says to protect himself.

NOTE: It is being sold without warranty and as is...

An example: When you pick up the car, the AC is cold. After a day or two days of ownership, the AC stops being cold because there's some slow leak. You can't go back to sue him.

It is an OLD car.
Don't expect to find many records.....
It is as is sale.

For testing take it to a Mercedes Mechanic.

Judging from the looks.... I would buy it.
Any used car you buy is a gamble. ;)

Regards,
aam.

Any time I see an ad with piss poor English and bad spelling I tend to stay away. His "brother" is probably a previous auto auction, hence lack of records.
