2000 SLK230, got a flashing and then fixed check engine light today. Plugged in a cheap OBDII / CAN scanner into the socket by the left knee, and the scanner didn't show anything. Other cars, it powers up when inserted.
Is there a trick?
Thanks!

yes it should fire up when you plug it in....

check with a multimeter pins 16 (power) and 5 (ground) to see if you have anything?

OBD II Connector Pinout

regardless of protocol they all use the same power and ground pins.

i have an older SLK so i have to use the OBD2 -> 38pin plug in engine bay...

with the SLK 2000, plug it in and then try maybe switching to igntion pos 2? and see if it wakes up?

My cheap OBD2 reader instructions paraphrased:
Turn the ignition off
Plug in scan tool
Wait for LCD display
Turn ignition on… position 2 is ok… no need to start engine
Press enter…

did a look around a few other MB sites ive found

1) plug it in, key ON (pos 2), it should wake and then use the unit
2) check fuse for OBD2
3) reseat the connector and make sure its firmly plugged in

try 1) i think it will work

I would pull the plug off the cam magnet, right at the top front on the engine and see if it is oily, if it is get a blocker from MB and fit it on, the chances are you have oil going through the wiring harness
