I'm about to buy this car and need to make sure it's not stolen. A lot of money on the line. It only has 14 numbers.

what gives?

Sounds right. I think the format changed after 1980 or so.

Is it a North American model? If so the VIN is in three places. There is a VIN tag attached about half way the A pillar visible through the windshield. There is a Federal Certification plate with the VIN riveted to the drivers drivers door jamb. The third and most important is the one stamped into the upper radiator support. If it is missing it is a sign that the car may have had front end damage.

If the car is a rest of the world model it will only have the stamped VIN standard.

That VIN looks correct. If you want to make it 17 add WDB to the front.

1981 was the first year for the standardized 17 digit VIN.

try adding WDB before those numbers call your local Mercedes dealer for info if they can't help u then e-mail or call TOM HANSON at the classic center [email protected] (949-598-4842) or ( 866-622-5277) ask him if he can send u the data card for this vehicle If you really think it's stolen call your local police with the WDB10704412047633 and see if its on their radar.Hope this helps ps i had to add the WDB to mine before they could give me any info on my 450

Carfax and the like don't do anything before 1981, precisely because VINs were nonstandard then.

The best suggestion I can make is to contact your local police department's auto theft detail (if they have one) and ask them to check if the car has been stolen.

CarFax sometimes will not have a record on cars before the standardized VIN went into effect for the 1981 model year. CarFax was founded in 1984.

They may or may not check it over the phone. Also N.C.I.C. used to only store records for four years unless the issuing department renewed it.

I'm more concerned about "a lot of Money..."
'78 450... A lot of money would have to mean a mint, low mileage with all records and known provenance, to qualify as "a lot of money..."

I wondered about that too. There are better model 107s than the '78 450SL North American model. That assumes it is a NA model.

Very good point.

Of course "a lot of money" to one can be peanuts to another......:)

It only has 23,000 miles. Runs like a beauty. This is why it's so irritating that I can't find any info about it.

So calling the police station is the best bet?

Since it's sunday, looks like most departments are closed.
Are you just checking to be on the safe side of things or does this deal have a smell to it?

Post up some pics or a link and let us critique it. After you spend the money will be too late.
