How closely is the CLK tied to the C-Class?

I've seen different articles about the CLK with different opinions on it's ties to the C-Class chassis. My wife drives a 1999 C280 and I can't believe that the CLK would be on the same chassis. Any thoughts? Thanks, Mark

Yes same chassis..

This is done to take advantage of common parts sourcing. Using a single platform pay off on the CLK. Take a look at the price difference of the last coupe made by Mercedes. The last coupe was built off the E-Class chassis. The CLK may look like it came from the larger E-Class line because of coupe's nose but the the CLK is considerably shorter. The coupe is also shorter overall than the C-class sedan by more than two inches, though they ride on the same 105.9-inch wheelbase.
