Is there any simpler test like a pH strip? I just realized that my 240K miles W211 has the factory original coolant in it. It always had the same level and color since new so I didn't pay much attention but 240K may be pushing it.

I have something like this. I am more concerned about the pH level, if the coolant turns acidic it will start eating the aluminum. I can use the pool water pH strips but I don't know what should be the correct coolant pH.

I don't think coolant can go that bad, but W211 have coolant life extended to 15 years (from 2 years on older models) due to chem pack build into reservoir.
The limit also says 150k miles, so in your 240k miles car the pack is long gone.
MB coolant goes for 20-some bucks, but you also have to replace the reservoir as that is the only way to get chem pack.
Some reports say that aftermarket reservoirs come with no pack.
I think you've got your money worth - get the system serviced the right way.

There are PH strips, but they do not tell the whole story. Gooing almost 100k miles past the service interval is much more of a concern.

If there is no record of coolant service then get the new reservoir from MB.(aftermarket ones do not have the silica additive pack in the rearvoir) Finally the G48 blue coolant is being sold at parts stores like O'reillys or Car Quest, but is not much cheaper than the dealer price. Mix it 50/50 with distilled water once the new reservoir is installed and you are good to go for many more years.

The main difference in those coolants is that some engines have wet sleeves and that require SCA balancing and monitoring to avoid cavitation.
Usually those also have coolant filters/SCA balancers as the stuff wears out.
DOESN'T apply to MB cars.

I found in my service records that the anticorrosion/antifreeze was replaced in 2013/160k miles as part of a water pump/t-stat replacement. Should just get a new expansion tank at this point?

How many miles are on it since the 160k service? Also if it was done by a dealer it may indicate a new tank was used. If it is not on the work order you can call the dealer.

At this point if a tank was not done you can do just the tank. I would go with genuine MB and make sure you have some G48 or MB genuine coolant mixed 50/50 for topping off.

55k miles since that service, and yes it was a dealer but no indication of a new tank in the service records and it seems to list out all the parts used per service. Thanks for the reply, I'll definitely order a new tank and top off the fluid
