We have always washed our black (non-metallic) '98 ML320 with chenille wash pads, carefully rotating them as we wipe and rising after every pass. After 8 years, the paint still looks pretty darn good.

But, this method is a pain. Would I be nuts to try a hose brush soap dispensing thing like this?

I would only use one of those if you had lost your mind completely. Continue with your current method as you have proved to yourself its value.

I always use lambswool mitts and the 2 bucket system.

Meguiars came out with a line of brushes last year, one of them is a car wash body brush and it works as advertised, won't swirl the paint. The problem I had using it was that brushes don't exert enough pressure like a sheepskin mitt and don't clean the stuck on dirt like bug splats and bee poop and such.

When will people learn there is no easy way out on anything if you want a top notch result. It applies to everything from weight loss, fitness, career, etc etc. As stated above keep your same routine it has worked for all these years why stop now? Personally I enjoy washing the car before our Friday night cruise. Its the personal satisfaction of a job well done.

New to the forum...had a quick question. What is your car washing technique? (2 bucket system?). Thanks in advance.
I have always favored the 2 bucket method. It has proven quite reliable over the years. Some on this board such as Buellwinkle have discussed something called a grit guard. Basically its a grate that sits in your bucket and traps the dirt below it. I dont really favor this as the water in the bucket never really sits still long enough to give many of the particulates suspended in the water time to settle.
