I believe my horn button has a short somewhere on my 2000 ML320. I know there are 3 horns, two at the front of each wheel well and one on the firewall. Whenever there is a slight bump to the car the horn blows. I have unhooked the two horns at the front of the wheel wells and the problem goes away; but, I have no horn while driving. Today I hooked them back up and tapped various parts of the car to see what causes the horns to blow. The most sensitive location is the steering wheel and if I nudge the horn button at all, even slightly, the horns blow. The alarm still works by blowing the firewall horn. Has anyone experienced this? Might it be as simple as a new horn button?

Edit: I wanted to mention also that when the horns do blow incorrectly, it is just blowing and not like the alarm. The lock and unlock buttons and the key in the ignition do not shut off the blowing. Only unplugging the horns works.

While the truck is stationary you say that touching the horn pad the horns will start to blow.

If you retouched the horn pad will it stop?

Have you or anyone in your family slammed the horn pad/air bag in anger while driving?

Thanks for the reply!

The horns will blow if the steering wheel is nudged, the horn button is nudged, the door is slammed, etc. However it is most sensitive around the steering wheel and horn button. This also occurs while the car is driving down the road. If you go over train tracks or a pot hole the horn blows and may not stop.

If you only upset the horns a little bit, say slam the door or slightly touch the horn button the horn will only blow very briefly and stop. If you really upset it like slam the door or bang the steering wheel (not horn button) it will go off until you unplug the horns.

Thanks again!
Yes, it is possible and likely that someone in my family punched the horn in anger. I won't mention who because I fear for my life. j/k

Well its clear that your problem is at the airbag horn pad behind at the sterring wheel. you need to remove the airbag and check the electric contacts behind and see what damage or adjustment needs to be done. make sure you disconnect the battery and wait 10 mins before you remove the airbag.
