Hey guys I have a question, since my retarded friend decide to not close my hood all the way when I let him drive my car, I seem to be in need of a hood now. I have a buddy who has a hood from a 85 500SEL that he can sell me. What I need to know is will the hood work on my 91 420SEL without to much modification. Now if I am right 85 was the first year they used the pull tab thingy in the grille on the w123 but is the w126 gonna be the same? If it has those dual pull tabs underneath the hood will I have to put those latches into my car?

The gen1 sedans seem to use the same idea as the SEC for the hood latches - namely nothing comes through the grille, instead, the latches are on each side of the hood. The gen2 sedans have the latch that comes through the grille. Having said that, I'm sure there must be a way to adapt either way, I can't imagine MBZ built different hoods just for that, as opposed to the hoods being the same and the hardware being different. You might need the cables and latches and all changed out to match. Not sure about the hood springs and all either.

I was wondering, it may come down to putting my "rings" from my hood onto the new hood. My right side catch does not really work anyway(the hood always looks open on the right) Would that be a hard ordeal, it just seems like some star pointed screws/bolts. Anyone else have any thoughts???

THEROG,
Have you adjusted the catch loops to sit deeper into the latch? Lubed up the Latch?

No, I haven't but that is a great idea, I never thought to do that. I just don't want to spend big $ on a hood when my buddy has one he'll basicly give to me. I want to buy his other 500SEL but the timing chain went in it and pretty much screwed that motor!

Don't forget there are also Hood Stops that you can adjust to get the height right. Also, you can adjust the lateral and longitudinal alignment of these hoods. Instructions are in the manual.

I've never really played with that either, but seeing as the hood has a huge freaking dent in the middle of it, it needs to be changed. It flew open at about 40mph and scared the living hell out of me, my windshield was cracked anyway so I wasn't too broken hearted about it cracking more.
