So my vacuum pump is pulling air in erratically. Gauge is bouncing all over.

I first checked the external check valve on the pump (it's the pump with one line out of the top, that uses a piston).

The external check valve is hollow!? there is nothing in it. I'm guessing all the parts got sucked into the vacuum pump.

Would you recommend

1) replacing the external check valve first, and seeing how it does.

--Or--

2) going ahead and taking apart the vacuum pump to see if I can get those pieces out?

If the parts are missing, you need to find them so they won't cause a jam and break things, which could lead to breaking the timing chain.
