Is 140,000 miles high mileage for a 2000 W220 S500L?

Someone told me, although it is a big 5.0 engine, other parts are well worn by that time and I will need to do a lot of replacing. True or not?

The engine makes a tapping noise, which is only when warmed up and standing still. Once I rev it up, the noise goes. My local mechanic told me to change the oil to a slightly thicker one-which I did but the noise is still there.

Dashboard says next service in 4000 miles but could this be inaccurate, because the car is shaking when stationary.

All help appreciated.

+1. An engine vibration at idle that disappears when you get going is pretty likely to be caused by bad motor mounts.

Unless you are selling the car, don't do that. Changing oil to a thicker one wouldn't solve the problem - this would only cure the symptom: after a while the noise will be back.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell the reason of that noise without seeing the car, so I advise you to visit some good workshop quite soon.

BTW, these cars easily run up to 250'000 miles if looked after, so 140'000 is far below the limit.

I bought mine with 150K and it looks and runs like brand new. I have all the Dealer Service and Maintenance info on it though so know that all the major problem areas on the car were already replaced with newer parts. I'd say with that many Miles the most important thing to know is who had the car before you and all the stuff that had to be done to it as far as repair and what the Maintenance History, more-so important than the number on the Odometer IMO....Of course that is if you haven't owned it for a long time yourself.

Yes, its far, far too many miles. That car is nearing the end of its life sooner rather then later. Those cars were not built to go a million miles. They were built to be as cheap as possible and still pass as a Mercedes.

I normally completely ignore your negative comments but it would be interesting to know exactly what is driving your hatred for these cars to the point that you would actually spend so much of your time stalking this site and show so much disrespect for actual owners..

The poster isn't an 'owner'. He is a would-be uneducated possible owner asking for help. He is TRYING to do the right thing and ask for help before he purchases this car, that, he knows nothing about (unlike a lot of the other people on this forum who ask after purchase). It is VERY hard for him to get an accurate answer when a whole bunch of people are just about saying 'oh yea... you are safe its the best car of all time'.

There is nothing false in what I write. The car IS nearing the end of its life. True. These cars were the first S class that was not designed to go a million miles. True. These were the first S class that was built as cheaply as possible on a strict cost cutting budget. Also true.

If anyone is 'stalking' this site it is you. You added nothing to this thread. And for the record...its fairly hard not to get a 'lemon' so called 'Mercedes' S class from 00-02. They were all lemons by industry standards. If you can't see that then you are simply blinded by the 3 pointed star.

You can not possibly be trying to tell me that your car is perfect.. Judging by the low miles you have, if it is 'All That" its because you only drive to the corner store to purchase more hater-aid..

What have I said that is untrue? Please expain to me. I'd really like to hear your answer. Should I begin lying to people who ask for information and tell them what every other fan-boy on here posts? Would you like to hear positive untrue facts? There seems to be a select number of people on here who just can't seem to handle the truth about their cars!

My dearest mr.xpowerseller. I have owned my W220 S430 since new. A 2001 model I do say. It currently has 100k miles and the only problem I have had to date was a flat tyre. So I do not understand how you can generalize. As mentioned before in other posts, you don't own a W220 and you base your facts on hear say. As asked before from other members what do you do on this forum? I'm not trying to nasty but sometimes one should know when to budd out!

LOL.. WWW3 is so easy here. then nobody ever has a chance to address to original point..LOL..

IF you don't have a shop look at it, no one here is going to be able to tell you for sure what your issue is.. Could be the valves, could be the Cats.. for the noise... As far as the shaking that could also be a million things as we are left to determine exactly what you mean by shaking and to what degree...

It's safer if you went to a shop, got a good firsthand diagnosis of the problem, then chime back in and ask for advice on what you should do from there based on the results of the diagnosis.. That would be better don't you agree?

You seemed to have missed my signature.
One anecdotal story does not constitute a statistic! I'm sure there are a hand full of lucky duck owners such as yourself who did get a reliable first gen W220. That does not mean that everyone did. Most did not. That is a fact. That also does not provide a cover for such poor Chrysler build quality on these cars and it doesn't mean that you aren't going to have to sink a serious amount of cash into your S to keep it on the road much longer.

It is widely known and common knowledge, that stupid Chrysler sucked massive amounts of money off Mercedes in the late 90's when the W220 went into production. The W220 was the cheapest S class ever built, bar none. Mercedes aimed to cut costs at every possible angle. They used the cheapest of the cheap of the W220 and paid big time for it. It was the second strike that helped ruin their reputation for good (first being the W210 96+ E). Mercedes spent 10x more to design and make the W140 S class then they did the W220. Just take a moment to inspect and sit in a 1999 W140, then a 2000 W220. Mercedes vs. Chrysler at it's best. Then on the other end, sit in a 06 W220, then an 07 W221. 'Nuff said.
