I am finally taking the initiative to replace the H7 bulbs and perform the flash to pass light modification for additional high beam power as documented by Drew. What I would like to know is what you would recommend for the bulbs to use and why? The obvious is likely brightness so please let me know how bright (K).

I recall that the Philips bulbs were highly rated based on tested brightness increase. You can go here

and see what is available in standard upgrades for the M (up to MY04). (FYI: some members have ordered from this site without problems.)

After some additional research resulting from your help I found this comparison that may be of interest.

I also found this very interesting discussion on the different bulbs and light emission: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=245757

The result of the two links above has now steared me clear of the PIAA's which I had been thinking of only yesterday. Glad I didn't run out and buy them.

What I would like to find now is some kind of understanding as to what is the right type of bulb to use for the ML.

I also have some confusion on the K level that is appropriate and real.

I've been using Osram Silverstar H7's in my driving lamps and am very satisfied with the light output.

Some tests showed that Philips Visionplus bulbs were marginally inferior, (although I would not trust those tests too much) so either would probably be as good.

Just make sure you do not touch the glass when installing them.

Incidentally, Philips Visionplus signalling bulbs claim that they light quicker than standard - very good for brake lights as they are brighter than LED's; I have these lights for my brakes and Philips Silvervision for the indicators and am very satisfied with them.

I bought them all from www.redgriffin.co.uk with whom I have no link other than being a satisfied customer, (they started selling the Philips signalling bulbs after I asked them to do so).
