Holy crap, reviving a thread that started over 11 years ago! I read the first post and thought it was from today, lol. I guess that would be a lot different to see a young person driving a W140 over a decade ago, the cars were definitely worth a lot more, especially as people saw all the issues that the W220 had and the demand for the W140 went up, kind of like what happened with the BMW E38 after the E65 was released
As Rich would say, it takes a very special kind of 'kid' to love these W140's like we do! Anyone could have bought one of these cars, but we love them and that may surprise some. These cars are very unique, the last 'TRUE' Mercedes-Benz product (like my sig). Everyone on the W140 forum should try to get more and more of these classics Mercedes-Benz put out, stack them for one day they will be rare.

One thing I love about Benzworld is that nobody cares if you revive a thread that is many years old!

Woof.
Wow Rich, I did not know your age before this post. Makes me appreciate your love for the W140 even more. Congrats on everything, I wish you many more years of enjoying great Mercedes engineering!

No, you had me all wrong, I was glad you revived this thread, because it had some great posts in it. Was just impressed that this site goes back so long and with such a wealth of info in it.

Yeah, I'm also very impressed, and I didn't get the wrong Idea when you posted. I just wanted to mention how awesome everyone is here when they talk about a few years back (as most of the people on BenzWorld are much older than you & me). And on other forums how the people that are 30+ look down at us that younger than them, as if we don't have any place on the forum.

Check my first Thread/Post out, Rich was very helpful and supportive. :eclipsee_steering:

I think I am a coupe fan more than a W140 fan now. I sat in a sedan the other day and in my humble opinion it is not a patch on the coupe unless you have the M120.

Don't shoot me everyone!!! :surrender:

I saved up over vacations for 2 years between 16-18 years of age. My dad knew I needed a car to drive to college so he said he'd sell me the coupe (we don't do "give for free" or "hand down", only "earn"). I bought it from him for 12k USD and been very happy. It's my first car, and had a learning curve with it, so it had its sad days thanks to my inexperience, and still learning. Expensive lessons I must say haha.

As for what kind of work I did, I worked with a lawyer I met on craigslist lol, loved it.

Welp this is indeed an interesting thread. I'm 19 and I got my w140 just a few months ago when my mom was fed up about driving it (its a 92 300SD. Yes its very slow, but my DD is a 240D, so I'm use to it :) ) Plus I fix it a lot, so inna way I earned the car and within a heart beat she said "its your car." Its my garage queen, my second pride and joy. It still needs a few things here and there, but being a full time college student I really don't have that much time to work on it... But its just cosmetic stuff.

Although the car gives me some headaches here and there, but its a pleasure to work on it and the grin you get in your face and the relaxed feel to drive such a car. It is indeed "The best or nothing"

the year was 1995, I was 15... and just got my permit.

Got pops to buy me my dream car of all time... a white 1991 Iroc Z convertible... with the promise not to drive it until I got my lic at age 15 1/2... car lasted about 2 weeks as I rammed it to the ass end of a trailer truck at some insane speed. Was doing a 100 MPH (for the first time in my life) looking down at the speedo just beyond myself at how cool I was... I had never gone that fast... speed limit was 45 and so as the way with these things, I came up on a extend left bend and got up on this truck before I knew it. Sad to say but that lovely 5.7 liter engine was sitting in the pass front seat moments later. (think my inexperience caused that accident because to this day I think I could of saved myself from it but I just kinda froze in space and time) after the crash, I walked out not knowing at the time that I had broke both arms, broke 3 ribs, broke my nose and the boxer bone on my right hand as well as a 2 inch gash on my inner thigh near my "wedding vegetables"... Truck driver looked like he had see a ghost. kept asking if it was only me in the car... I kept saying yes but he would not believe me. I kept saying that I was okay... he wouldn't believe that either... he decided to touch me to make sure I was good and I remember pushing him to the floor... ( I was pissed about my car and this fucker was touching me... what a jerk I was). He told me that he was an EMT, I told him I don't give a fuck and to get the fuck out of here!, I just kept screaming that to him. of course I was fearing police were on the way and my not having a lic. would get me thrown in jail for sure. He wouldn't leave.. I tried to get back into the camaro (don't know why) but I could not open the door... The poor truck driver insisted that he drive me home... I was like fuck you!... you made me fuck my car up... (I was just frightened about the whole thing at this point and wanted him gone). He says, I wont call the police if you let me take you home. I agreed. He took me home and the first sight of my dad watering the lawn made me sick to my stomach. I jump out of the 18 wheeler and my dads looking at me like what the fuck happened... then at the looks at the truck driver with the same look... the truck driver gets out and gets to my pops faster than I could. Says a few words to my pops really up close. I think he must of said that I should of been dead or something like that and that I was super scared... anyway, I was standing on the sidewalk about 10 feet away scared that I was about to get the ass whopping of a life time remembering only 3 years back when I stuffed my dads 1983 Chevy impala into the kitchen via the garage door and the wall separating the garage from the kitchen... that too was after I had been warned not to take my pops car anymore... I had been stealing his car since 10 years old for the trill of an unauthorized drive around the block. anyway, back to the story... I stood away because I wanted enough space to get a lead start in the event that pops tried to rush me... lol. Pops looks at me and says, GET YOUR FUCKING ASS INSIDE!... I did without even thinking (lol. fear is a wonderful thing). Mins later, He tells my moma in a loud tone that hes going to get the car... loud enough for me to hear... I get up to leave with him and for the first time in my life he looks at me with a stare that I will not ever forget and says if you move even an inch from your room, so help me god!... I sat there in my room feeling more and more pain all over my body with every passing min. Pops got back in about 20 mins later and didn't say a word to me... even took me to the hospital. Later that night I caught my moma kiss me after I feel asleep. As A parent now, I can only imagine what he was thinking about my escape from certain death.

fast forward 6 months, got my pops to buy me a mustang 5.0... he was hesitant but I promised to be good. Needless to say but that car lasted on about two weeks too as i burned the motor and clutch as well as the rear end from doing launches and burn outs. Pops refused to buy me another car.. so I went and bought myself a 1992 GSXR 750. Soon as I pulled up with the bike, my moma became hysterical demanding the keys to the bike and crying unbelievably. She called my pops at work and he came home in 10 mins and whopped that ass to a pulp for making my moma cry. It was the last time he beat me...

weeks went by... was riding my bicycle and hating life...

my bro who is 8 years older, yes same one that you guys were mad at for raping my c140 in the two months he had it, had bought a white 1992 w140 500 sel used but only 2 or 3 years old at the time. He got it not too long before my mustang fiasco... a car that he still has today with over 250k on the dial btw... anyway, I remember after a while with no car or bike and seeing how depressed I was, he took me to the MB dealer with him and ordered a new key and a key chain... when the key came in a few days later, he gave them to me and said that I should be more careful. I drove that car from 15 1/2 until I was 22 (had other cars in the same time too). Hell, I think the title of that car is still in my name. I would drive it from mon to sat and on sunday it went to him... this poor guy made payments and paid insurance on a car he didn't even drive for over seven years... don't forget he was only 23 when he bought it... he got it back on his 30th birthday. lol.

From that point onwards, Ive always owned at least one benz of some sort... walked away from the w140 during the mortgage boom days and dabbled in all sorts of other cars from rollas to c6 corvettes to vipers to trucks to bikes... anyway in 08 got back into a w140 series and probably will have one or two for the rest of my days.

Still joke with my brother about using the back seat of his car more than he has... lmao and its true... I got so much yum yum from the girls in that car, its not even funny... it was a hotel on wheels for me, going city to city through-out California collecting that sweet nectar that is the va jay jay... lol. shit, married the one that wouldn't... funny how that works.

end of story but this thread was a great read and brought back many many memories... Thanks for the revival. Got to say, Im very lucky to have the family that I do because I don't know where the hell I'd be today without them.

Also I should note that I had been working in my dads restaurant since I was 9. I don't want to make it seem like I was spoiled (although I was)...

Hmm, interesting story bnZE430/1999.

I don't know what my dad would have done if I ever got into an accident with a car he bought me. He would have probably murdered me.

I was always a very careful and good driver, the one "accident" i was in was when some idiot drunk sideswiped my Audi on the freeway. Other than that I always drive thinking what the hell is the guy to my left or right going to do in the next second? Congrats that you survived, but you sure got lucky. Seems you didn't learn your lesson the first, second, or even third time around, haha.

Thanks brotha,

In 98' I got side swiped on my brand new R1 motorbike (it was a week old) and I slid across three lanes of traffic after flying off the bike and sliding on my back... thank god for full race leathers and a helmet. I hit the sound barrier... and still remember the crunch sound that came out of my body... that one hurt like no pain I've ever felt as all my internal organs had somewhat shifted and were either bleeding or bruised including my frontal lobe. broken ribs, broken hand, broken leg and concussion but I was awake through the whole ordeal.

Didn't learn my lesson until 2000 when I got into a head on collision and ended up comatose in the hospital... coma lasted 3 1/2 weeks. All said and done... I have no recollection of two years of my life. Sad part is that I wasn't even the one who F'd up... I was driving through a left turn with a green arrow in first gear at 15MPH when a suburban with an intoxicated driver and two kids in the back seat ran the straight red light and literally sent me into oblivion. His cars left front wheel was found 40 feet away with various parts of both cars found up to a 100 feet away... They estimated he hit me at 57 mph, im sure it was faster... one of his kids flew from the back seat and hit the windshield and broke her jaw, the other kid hurt her neck and this idiot got arrested. He should of hit my passenger side but he swerved right just before the intersection at which point i swerved right to miss him only to find him suddenly swerve left and some how instead of avoiding me, he hit me dead on... 1 beautiful red 1996 supra twin turbo dead on impact... was one of my favorite cars at the time but now I don't even like being near one and if I sit in one for more than about 30 mins... I start to get a bad headache. I am to this day paranoid about going through that intersection (its really close to my home) I just remember I worked my ass off to buy that car... Only part of the that car that was salvageable was the rear trunk lid, spoiler, rear bumper and the rear lights... even drive shaft and rear axle were broken off and the car was bowed-out in the middle, engine block was cracked, and car caught on fire mins after the crash... I just remember it being very dark and smokey in the car... I remember grabbing my buddy in the passenger seat who was himself knocked out and crawling out of the car limping with him on my shoulder. I passed out about 30 feet from the car in the middle of the road. Awoke almost a month later... My buddy has had many complications from that accident both physically and physiologically.

I laugh at it now but its not funny because I cant even tell my young cousins, nieces and nephews, or anyone else that knows how many cars I totaled by age 20 to SLOW THE HELL DOWN.

I first saw the W140 in 93 it was a black 400sel which belonged to my father's friend who bought it brand new. I fell in love with that car and told my dad I wanted one, one day. He said "U shouldn't buy that car, might b too small of a car for that big head of urs once u acquire it. " smart ass", LOL. I worked for my dad since the day I could reach over the counter in the restaurant business. Pops bought a few mbzs before the purchase of the W140. W124s we had most of, w126s and w163s. In 2004 pops and I acquired the W140 originally for my mother, she too is in love with the W140 being that it was the car that the princess was driven in and died in. She is a huge fan of the princess, has the dolls, books, etc. Mom drove car and enjoyed it. Then the increase of gas prices made her not like the W140 all that much more, so she wanted to sale it. Normally our mbzs ended up in scrap yards, totalled or sold. Pops never want to pay big $$$$ for repairs, he thought it was easier and cheaper to buy another one. Soooooo since I couldn't keep 2 of our favorite w124s I decided that this W140 was staying with me for life!! so after 15+ plus years of working 364 days a year , 12-14 hour days with pops in our restaurant business the W140 became mine!!! I was 25, driving a W140 and working as Taco technician aka TAQUERO! LOL. Hey, Didnt get 401k/ retirement plan but I got me a W140 S500! ? Cheers!!

for work i do many things signs, gemology, visual graphix.........and if i spend wisely i can have my cake and eat it too :)

bnZE430/1999... What a life! I actually do drive illegally quite often (I have my permit and in two months will have my license) but I do it very cautiously, and sneaky when I'm alone or with a friend.

Aw, the joys of being young and enjoying the drive. To be honest, I hate driving now. It's not so much the drive itself, as I love my cars, but I just can't stand how other people drive and the traffic. If there was no traffic and cops, I would definitely just drive for the love of the ride. Unfortunately, it is a nightmare to drive around L.A. I know people call it the "Car Mecca" but while there are tons of great cars around, the roads and traffic make it Hell.

How old are you, btw? I remember getting my permit at 16 1/2 and license at 17.

 I'm 17 and 10 months (on the 30th) I get my license. I love to drive and can't wait to get a car of my own, I waited so long to get my permit (17, and 3 months) and obviously I counted down... I would love to drive a nice W140 or C140 (even better).

Why didn't I get my license/permit earlier? Well I did something stupid too, I failed 9th grade about 3 years ago, and if you fail you can't take drivers ed. I failed because I just wasn't interested (big reason at the time) in school, nor did I care, nor did I show up. I'm much different now and of course it's way better me failing than making a much bigger mistake, and some kids think it's a big deal, yet it isn't and it doesn't make me any different than them .

"the joys of being young", Hey aren't you 21? We're both really young here!

I really do drive very well IMO and very cautiously, I don't do stupid things like other kids and right now I'd be so happy with a car of my own (A lot of nice OLDER Mercedes out there!) :p. Some people complain too much (no offense), sure LA roads may suck so much, but at the same time you could be driving a econobox trying to save gas, and being cheap everywhere, in a much worse way of living also. Of course I know your getting like 12 MPG in the city or 15MPG in the city if your really not pushing it much, but some people can't even afford a car .
