The Only Thing Good About the 220

In replying to Kristian, the 92 600SEL ofcoarse will be faster than an 03 S500 because despite the old and new body styles, you have a 5.0 V8 competing with a 6.0 V12- NO CONTEST! Which brings me to a point about the only thing I like about the w220, the w220 S600 comes with 490 horsepower stock! You have a much more powerful engine in the new 600 than from the old 600, and on top of that a much more lighter body on the new 600 than on the old 600! IT'S LIKE COOKIES AND CREAM!!!!!![:p]

The new w221 for 05

Its not just some of us that dosen't like the w220, Mercedes itself is clearly not totally satisfied with the design. That is why they have already planned to stop production on the w220 and start production on the w221 in 2005. The w220 will be the shortest produced S-Class to date. [and rightly so] Even though heavily disguised in this spy photo of the 221, it looks like the new S will make a dramatic comeback! The grill is bigger and broader, the hood and front dosen't slope as much, the headlights are not TOO aerodynamic, and the overall body is sleek, but still has some presence. Mercedes has realized what they did wrong on the 220 and are going back to their roots with the 221!

the W221

In the latest Automobile Magizine issue there are pictures of the W221. It looks like single round lights on the front and a Maybach-ish back. I did a brief search online, and the Automobile Mag pictures look somewhat similar to the covered cars.

Re: RE: German Lexus

I agree that the new w220 is not as nice as the W140. But I would never compare a mercedes to a lexus. The new w220 has some cool stuff on it but I would still rather drive a W140. My dads W220 S500 is a lot slower than my 92 600SEL. I find it strange that a 92 MB is still as good if not even better than a 03 MB. also, ///S320 are you still looking at the SlK's?

Yes but you have 4 more cylinders don't you? Maybe a 2003 S600 will up for the match. [;)]

Re: Re: RE: German Lexus

I had mentioned before that the 2003 S600 has 490 horsepower stock while the 1992 600SEL has around 400 hp with a much heavier body!

re: dont say the word lexus

I am supprised they allow that word on these forums. And to compare it to a Mercedes, any mercedes is horrible. But back to the 92 s600 @406 hp vs the 03 s600 @ 490 hp. Of course the 03 would win. All I was trying to say is that Mercedes should have come farther in 11 years. And they had to install a twin turbo on the 5.4L engine to get the 490 hp. Otherwise they would be stuck with the 386 hp. But what I ment by saying that I would rather drive a W140 than a W220 is due to the following reasons.
1. the w140 looks cooler
2. The W140 is more solid
3. you can buy 4 W140s for every W220
4. The W140 is hand made
5. The W140 looks better inside
6. The W140 has less plastic.
The 03 S600 is cool though. It is faster than any BMW.

If I had the choice between a regular w140 600 and a w220 600 with lets say 900 hp, and I could only chose one to have, I would choose the regular w140 600 TEN FOLD! And ya know what- They should outlaw the word 'Lexus' on this forum. Lexus cars have NO PLACE, and I MEAN NO PLACE to be compared with MBs! Lexus cars are f#!^&*ing TOYOTAS for crying out loud, but Lexus owners are either too stupid or too embarassed to admit this!

Re: If I had the choice between a regular w140 600 and a w220 600 with lets say 900 hp, and I

I have a 1995 S420, and a 1992 Lexus LS400. You know, there is absolutely NO comparison. The MB is infinitely better than the Lexus. The Lexus people will never understand. Yes the Lexus is quite reliable. But, the difference in every part on each car is like night and day. MB wasn't joking when they said "Engineered like no other car in the world." And the W140 is just out of this world. Even the W220 is no comparison.

The Lexus is reliable because it is a Toyota, as with other Japanese cars like Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc. which are famous for their durability and low maintenance. You can see very old and beat up Honda Civics or Toyota Corollas with high milage as you would with an old beat up Mercedes. But the Japanese cars will never come close to touching the overall quality of an M.B.

Too broad and not substantive specifics....

A lot of people beat up on the Japanese (or even American) cars versus Mercedes. I own both a Toyota and a Mercedes S-Class. I think they both serve different purposes and a comparison is unfair. However, I'm curious to hear some specifics comparing the Lexus with a Mercedes S-Class, especially from someone that has either owned both, or has sufficient experience to comment. What is it that you find MB to be much superior to Lexus. I think reliability is very important in a car, so is low cost maintenance. And, IMO, MB doesn't come far enough as far as maintenance is concerned. Let's hear some specifics now...As far as prestige and European styling is concerned, I think the Mercedes S-Class (W140) is in a different league from the Lexus. Also, MB has always been first to introduce the "cooler" things and safety features....If I had the choice (and extra money to spare), I would always choose the MB over the Lexus. But again, it's my opinion.....The Lexus, I think is a great car, good looking (slightly boring), great build quality and terrific value for money - definitely lacks the presence of the W140 though.

i've had a lot of experience with toyotas. before i got my benz, i was driving an '88 camry and then an '01 camry; my parents own three camrys, two of which have 240,000+ miles on them EACH. while the camrys don't feel like a benz, they never break down, either.

anyway, i'd also be curious about SPECIFIC reasons why you guys think toyota and lexus suck ass and mercedes is so great. is it performance? features? reliability? cool factor? nationality? don't get me wrong -- i love my benz, and, at least while i can still afford to get it fixed when it breaks, i'll keep it. but i wouldn't look down on someone who chose to go with lexus as being stupid, ignorant, or embarrassed. in my view, it's a personal choice.

It's About History...

What makes the M.B. better than Japanese luxury cars is simply the background or history. Do you see any Toyota[Lexus] being auctioned off at a classic car show? I don't think so. Infact I've never seen any Japanese cars at a classic car show. How far do Japanese cars go back? A mere 50 years at most? When M.B. is more than a century old! When did Toyota decide to slap on the name Lexus? Was it only 15 years ago? I think the oldest Lexus I ever saw was from 1990. Am I right? Y'see its more than just specifics of a car, its a history, a legacy, a FEELING. The Mercedes is the most respected, oldest and most recognized car in the world and that is what separates the BEST from the rest.
