Being a young guy and saving up through blood, sweat, and tears for two older MBs- [a 1976 280 S and a 1983 380 SEL] I would just like to know how you young dudes were able to get into w140s?! What did you have to go through before getting one? Did your parents buy them or not, etc.?- Don't worry, I'm not going to insult anyone. I'm just curious on how they were obtained. I've been wanting a w140 for a long time and would like to hear experiences in the field from lucky and I do mean 'lucky' young 140 owners.

Interesting stories, guys. Sorry about what happened, Kristian. I do not know why they still let some of these older people on the road!*#$% I had an older man in a big Ford Crown Victoria back into my big benz when coming out of a parking lot. The guy was so senile that he kept pushing into my side without feeling ANYTHING! He didn't HEAR anything either!- I was holding down my blazin horn for a good 7 seconds until I relized that this mad man would not stop his car! The only thing I could do was give my car gas and get out of there! I had to get out of my car and chase after him. I angrily confronted him and he acted like he didn't do anything, he had no idea what just happened. I inspected my car for any damages and there wasn't even a scratch! The ford was just moving too slow and was nudging my side with the soft edge of his bumper. I knew if there any damages to my SEL, this guy would definately pay for it. Lucky for him [ and me ] the benz was fine. The car is a true tank, I knew if it had been a 'normal' car there would have been some damages. Anyways, it is so dangerous and wrong for these type of people to have licences. Something needs to be done. BTW- Kristian show some pics of your car, the almighty 600 is my dream car.

[:D]Too sweet! That is one nice 600 SEL, it looks in very good condition and the engine even looks new. How much did you pay for it? Yours is a 1993 right? It seems like the fair condition early 600s go for around 25,000 to 30,000 dollars in the U.S. BTW- Could you also show a pic of the interior?

Your salesperson was exaggerating the 'when new' price by 30 grand. The 'when new' price of the 600 SEL was actually $130,000+. The proof is on the official MB website. The new price of the S600 today starts at only $115,000- gee, do you think the quality went down? Great interior pic, but do you have a picture of the dash, steering wheel, speedometer, etc.? Thanks for the compliment on my older SEL, it just turned 20. Even though I love w140s and hope to buy one someday, the w126s remain my favorite S-Class series of all time. The design on these cars kept in style for over a decade.

The w220 S500 that your dad bought is definately not the same car as a w140 S500. Just be glad that he didn't buy the w220 S600 for 115,000 that I mentioned before. Here is the interior of my car so you can compare the evolution of the early 80s to the early 90s. BTW- It looks like we both have the same floor mats.

That leather conditioner sounds like a good idea, I'll give it a try. You could say my car was the 600 of 1983 because it was top of line in the U.S. at the time, it has the same Burl Walnut wood trim that yours has. I do believe that the 126 interior did lay the foundation for the 140 interior because of all the similar traits. I totally agree with you- the 126 and 140 were the last 2 TRUE MBs without a doubt, the designs for the new millenium S-Class were a disaster inside and out. I hope MB will redeem itself in 2005 with the new w221 S!

The Only Thing Good About the 220

In replying to Kristian, the 92 600SEL ofcoarse will be faster than an 03 S500 because despite the old and new body styles, you have a 5.0 V8 competing with a 6.0 V12- NO CONTEST! Which brings me to a point about the only thing I like about the w220, the w220 S600 comes with 490 horsepower stock! You have a much more powerful engine in the new 600 than from the old 600, and on top of that a much more lighter body on the new 600 than on the old 600! IT'S LIKE COOKIES AND CREAM!!!!!![:p]

The new w221 for 05

Its not just some of us that dosen't like the w220, Mercedes itself is clearly not totally satisfied with the design. That is why they have already planned to stop production on the w220 and start production on the w221 in 2005. The w220 will be the shortest produced S-Class to date. [and rightly so] Even though heavily disguised in this spy photo of the 221, it looks like the new S will make a dramatic comeback! The grill is bigger and broader, the hood and front dosen't slope as much, the headlights are not TOO aerodynamic, and the overall body is sleek, but still has some presence. Mercedes has realized what they did wrong on the 220 and are going back to their roots with the 221!

I couldn't find any info on the 221 on the Automobile Magazine website, guess I'll have to buy the current issue. But for now here are some more pictures of the w221 including concept artwork!

Re: Re: RE: German Lexus

I had mentioned before that the 2003 S600 has 490 horsepower stock while the 1992 600SEL has around 400 hp with a much heavier body!

I agree that the new w220 is not as nice as the W140. But I would never compare a mercedes to a lexus. The new w220 has some cool stuff on it but I would still rather drive a W140. My dads W220 S500 is a lot slower than my 92 600SEL. I find it strange that a 92 MB is still as good if not even better than a 03 MB. also, ///S320 are you still looking at the SlK's?

Yes but you have 4 more cylinders don't you? Maybe a 2003 S600 will up for the match. [;)]

If I had the choice between a regular w140 600 and a w220 600 with lets say 900 hp, and I could only chose one to have, I would choose the regular w140 600 TEN FOLD! And ya know what- They should outlaw the word 'Lexus' on this forum. Lexus cars have NO PLACE, and I MEAN NO PLACE to be compared with MBs! Lexus cars are f#!^&*ing TOYOTAS for crying out loud, but Lexus owners are either too stupid or too embarassed to admit this!

The Lexus is reliable because it is a Toyota, as with other Japanese cars like Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc. which are famous for their durability and low maintenance. You can see very old and beat up Honda Civics or Toyota Corollas with high milage as you would with an old beat up Mercedes. But the Japanese cars will never come close to touching the overall quality of an M.B.

It's About History...

What makes the M.B. better than Japanese luxury cars is simply the background or history. Do you see any Toyota[Lexus] being auctioned off at a classic car show? I don't think so. Infact I've never seen any Japanese cars at a classic car show. How far do Japanese cars go back? A mere 50 years at most? When M.B. is more than a century old! When did Toyota decide to slap on the name Lexus? Was it only 15 years ago? I think the oldest Lexus I ever saw was from 1990. Am I right? Y'see its more than just specifics of a car, its a history, a legacy, a FEELING. The Mercedes is the most respected, oldest and most recognized car in the world and that is what separates the BEST from the rest.

Thanks for the comment, janos. I'm just a young guy that really respects these cars. I grew up with these cars and they make me happy when I see them, they have this nostolgic feel to them. I'm not a snob, I'm not trying to show off, I just really love these cars for what they are! I'm glad you share my enthusiasm!

btw, FDM, your enthusiasm about your car and mercedes in general is very infectious -- you're a true enthusiast! [8D]
