I too used to think that the W220 was nothing compared to the W140. While the W140 and the W126 will always hold a special place, the newly redesigned W220 is nice. I sat in it at the Auto Show and it was very luxurious. Granted it didn't have as much wood or leather as the 600SEL would have, I would still like a W220 over a W140 for a couple of reasons.
It's newer which means it employs technology that makes a bunch of things better. Yes it would be a handful out of warranty, but I believe that almost any S class out of warranty is not cheap. Also performance and power are much better.
W140 was the king of its day and still remains. But at one point you just have to give in to the new models.
