HEY ALL YOUNG 140 DRIVERS!

7834 Views 80 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  97S320Jim
Being a young guy and saving up through blood, sweat, and tears for two older MBs- [a 1976 280 S and a 1983 380 SEL] I would just like to know how you young dudes were able to get into w140s?! What did you have to go through before getting one? Did your parents buy them or not, etc.?- Don't worry, I'm not going to insult anyone. I'm just curious on how they were obtained. I've been wanting a w140 for a long time and would like to hear experiences in the field from lucky and I do mean 'lucky' young 140 owners.

Re: how I got my 600SEL

Most people assume that I sell drugs or stole the car. I am 18 and agree that there are not many people my age who drive such nice cars. People dont believe that I paid for my car. Even the police questioned how I earned enoughf to buy the car.
I started working 30-40 hours a week in a furniture store while going to high school at the age of 14. At the age of 16 I started a furniture assembly and delivery company. After school I would assemble furniture and make deliverys. By Feb. 2002 I was makig 100+ average an hour. On weekends I would often do 10-14 hours of hard work a day. Then on Mar. 3 2002 everything changed. I was getting out of class at High School and was standing in the parking lot getting into my car when a 92 year old laidy swerved off the road at around 40 mph and hit me against my parked car. She broke my back, hip, ribs and caused severe nerve damage to my right foot. She did not even stop! she kept driving and was caught by the police down the street. It was her 3'rd hit and run in 2 years! But this is the crasy part, they did not even ticket her because she was 92! Today she is still driving and I am unable to work. I couldent even finish my last year of High School. Every day I have to go to the physical therapist and she is out driving likley to hit another person. I baught the car with what I got from the insurance company and what I had saved up.
You thought I was lucky but after you have learned all the facts you might think otherwise.

It wasn't hard at all!

Well, I saved up about $7k and financed my W140, initally my credit didn't qualify so I talked my friend into co-signing the loan for me. The key is to maintain a stable work history and have all your income documented in detail so the banks would be more incined to approve your loan. My friend acquired a W220 S420 with $10k down and 859.00 a month and it seems to be a worthwhile investment, I still prefer the W140 better than the new version S Classes, though. I used to own multiple cars myself but I found out that it's better to be distinquished in one BEAUTIFUL car than 2 or 3 Nice Cars. I hope my answer could be of help. Good Luck!

Hey i feel sorry for you Kristian, but i hope soon you will be fine back on your feet..One time a guy hit me frm the back while i was driving my c280 and i stopped and i got out of the car and the guy said "hey sorry man, can i go now?" i almost busted his chops. I was in a shock as the car hit me at around 30mph atleast. But i grabbed him and called the cops and took his insurance info and got my car fixed. I really dont give 2 sh*ts no matter how old the person is. If the guy who hit me was nice and would have apologized in a civilized manner, i would have let him go.

I bought my S320 as i graduated frm college and ended up with a network engineering job at an investment bank. This is my 2nd benz, the first one was a 96 c280. I dont drive my car much, its parked almost 5 days a week.

Interesting stories, guys. Sorry about what happened, Kristian. I do not know why they still let some of these older people on the road!*#$% I had an older man in a big Ford Crown Victoria back into my big benz when coming out of a parking lot. The guy was so senile that he kept pushing into my side without feeling ANYTHING! He didn't HEAR anything either!- I was holding down my blazin horn for a good 7 seconds until I relized that this mad man would not stop his car! The only thing I could do was give my car gas and get out of there! I had to get out of my car and chase after him. I angrily confronted him and he acted like he didn't do anything, he had no idea what just happened. I inspected my car for any damages and there wasn't even a scratch! The ford was just moving too slow and was nudging my side with the soft edge of his bumper. I knew if there any damages to my SEL, this guy would definately pay for it. Lucky for him [ and me ] the benz was fine. The car is a true tank, I knew if it had been a 'normal' car there would have been some damages. Anyways, it is so dangerous and wrong for these type of people to have licences. Something needs to be done. BTW- Kristian show some pics of your car, the almighty 600 is my dream car.

RE: pics of car. and old people driving.

It is crazy how some of these people are allowed to drive. I hear so many stories similar to yours and for some strange reason nothing is being done about it. I am glad your car was not damaged; if it were any other car I am sure that it would have been a totally diffrent story. I was thinking about getting "PANZRWGN" on my liscence plate. Here are the pictures you asked for. -Kristian

[:D]Too sweet! That is one nice 600 SEL, it looks in very good condition and the engine even looks new. How much did you pay for it? Yours is a 1993 right? It seems like the fair condition early 600s go for around 25,000 to 30,000 dollars in the U.S. BTW- Could you also show a pic of the interior?

Re: pics of interior

Hi, it is actually a 1992. I paid 25,000 for it and it was a friend of mine who buys a lot of cars at the dealership for his limmo company who got me the good deal on it. It came with 59K miles. It had only one owner who was a priest who is on of those TV shows.
I still find it hard to believe that this kind of car can depriciate so fast. The sales person at the MB dealer told me that the 92 600SEL when new costed in the 160,000+ range. It still smells, looks and drives like new (almost). I have also been looking for one of the 2 door W140's. Are they calles w140's though? I also like the older sel like yours. I saw a really cool late 80's 560 sec a few weeks ago for sale.
Here is the picture you asked for.

Your salesperson was exaggerating the 'when new' price by 30 grand. The 'when new' price of the 600 SEL was actually $130,000+. The proof is on the official MB website. The new price of the S600 today starts at only $115,000- gee, do you think the quality went down? Great interior pic, but do you have a picture of the dash, steering wheel, speedometer, etc.? Thanks for the compliment on my older SEL, it just turned 20. Even though I love w140s and hope to buy one someday, the w126s remain my favorite S-Class series of all time. The design on these cars kept in style for over a decade.

RE: picture of dash

this is the only picture of the dash that I have on my computer. Next time I borrow my friend's camara I will take some more detailed pictures. I found the origional sticker that was in the window of my car and you were correct it was not 160K. but it was 137K and it had a 4,700 Bose speaker option and a 3,000 cell phone option. I am assuming he ment 160K with tax and liscence and a big mark up. Also about quality my dad liked my car so much that he baught a new S500 and he was discourged when he compaired it to my car. The new car has some new fancy stuff on it but it does not feel the same. The w140 is much more solid and does not have as much plastic.

here is the pictrue you asked for.[;)][;)]

That is a killer 600! I think the interior options of that particular car are unreal, power back seats with heaters are cool options to have.

What years/models did the rear seats have the console divider in the 140? Not the fold down armrest like in most Benzes, but the rear seat like the S-Coupe W140 with a wood console in the center.

The motor in the 600 also looks pretty trick!

The w220 S500 that your dad bought is definately not the same car as a w140 S500. Just be glad that he didn't buy the w220 S600 for 115,000 that I mentioned before. Here is the interior of my car so you can compare the evolution of the early 80s to the early 90s. BTW- It looks like we both have the same floor mats.

RE: 80's dash.

Thanks for all the positive comments. The thing that I like about Mercedes cars is that they try and keep the same style in all the cars. I notice that in your SEC you have many of the same features that they have on the W140. With the new W220 I think they changed too much. It almost seems that mercedes cars get better with time. I actually like the 80's sel and the w140's styling better than the w220. Your interior looks good. You should try and use some leather conditioner on your steering wheel. I used it on mine and it made look and feel like new. We do have the same floor mats! I just got some all season floor mats for the winter because I want to keep the origionals looking nice for the summer. [;)]I found another picture of the dash.

That leather conditioner sounds like a good idea, I'll give it a try. You could say my car was the 600 of 1983 because it was top of line in the U.S. at the time, it has the same Burl Walnut wood trim that yours has. I do believe that the 126 interior did lay the foundation for the 140 interior because of all the similar traits. I totally agree with you- the 126 and 140 were the last 2 TRUE MBs without a doubt, the designs for the new millenium S-Class were a disaster inside and out. I hope MB will redeem itself in 2005 with the new w221 S!

I too used to think that the W220 was nothing compared to the W140. While the W140 and the W126 will always hold a special place, the newly redesigned W220 is nice. I sat in it at the Auto Show and it was very luxurious. Granted it didn't have as much wood or leather as the 600SEL would have, I would still like a W220 over a W140 for a couple of reasons.

It's newer which means it employs technology that makes a bunch of things better. Yes it would be a handful out of warranty, but I believe that almost any S class out of warranty is not cheap. Also performance and power are much better.

W140 was the king of its day and still remains. But at one point you just have to give in to the new models.

In my eyes, W220 is nothing but a german made lexus.

RE: German Lexus

I agree that the new w220 is not as nice as the W140. But I would never compare a mercedes to a lexus. The new w220 has some cool stuff on it but I would still rather drive a W140. My dads W220 S500 is a lot slower than my 92 600SEL. I find it strange that a 92 MB is still as good if not even better than a 03 MB. also, ///S320 are you still looking at the SlK's?
