http://www.benzline.com/pages/conver_sion.html

Every since i'v read about this conversion on the brd back in April been searching for a supplier. Heres the only link i've found. PROBLEM: Contact them by email with NO replies!!

Theres not much info on this conversion. It cant be cuz a lack of Demand, everyone thinks its HellaHot. I believe its lack of Supply only. If we can gather together some buyers from this board, sure we can make this a reality!

If anyone has info on U.S. suppliers of the conversion. Hopefully some one can find PICS to post on the board. Please email me with further info at:

Hmmm... conversion into a taurus..?

Why would someone want to make their Mercedes look like a taurus..? Hmmm.. Just wondering..
Oh you Traditionalist....

You traditionalist are something, or should i use the term "Purest". Comparing the W220 to a Tau*#$, Taur#$, Urghhhh. I can't even say the word of that vehicle. I know, i know, you dislike change. Well change is good, very good! Say these words with me Lorinser, Brabus, Amg. Mmmmm doesn't it feel good!
You know there is a place for purest like yourself, it called "The Past".

Now onto that W140 to W220 conversion. This is a 1st! Have to say, web page gives no true gauge as to how the conversion would turn out. Can't be certain, but its got to be some sought of doctered image from Photo program or the like! Would have to see actual vehicle photos to be convinced. But am intrigued... Lets hope for more.
Relax VW .. I just dont recommend it

Its not about change. There is a huge difference between W140 and W220. W220 is known for quality problems. When mercedes started this new line, they scraped their "million mile test runs". They are mass produced vehicles and dont deserve the S title. Probably this is why, they are re-designing the S class agian for the 05 model year.

I test drove one.
I did not like it.
I wont buy it.

Now to the conversion:

The w140 is a different vehicle then w220. The height, lenght and weight is completely different than the w220. I wonder how would you put a body of a newer s class on a old s class. Mercedes S W140 is not a rice car. Ure not making a small modification change on a VolksWagen. Do u know what ure talking? Each and every screw of this car is designed, engineered and tested to fit. And passed quality control inspection.

I dont trust them, bottom line.

Some small little factory in china is making the body that will fit a W140? What about paint job? material quality? I dont want the body to be flying away when iam doing 140?

No way man, i stick to traditions.

And by the way, Lorinser, AMG and Barbus are not new names. Infact i had AMG wheels on my c- class.

Its also about integrity. You bought a W140, why put a W220 body? to show off?

Someone has to be a real nut to buy this..

I Agree

I 100% agree with S320. Everything he said is completely on the mark! You want a w220... then just go buy a w220! But don't butcher a perfectly good w140, the last of the biggest S-Classes in history, destined to be extremely collectable one day. Plus, it is true that a competely new S-Class [ w221 ] will start production in 2005, so before you know it, that body kit will be out of style!
[)]
There's no way a 220 boby will fit on a 140 chassis. It's impossible. Well, if it's not i...

There's no way a 220 body will fit on a 140 chassis. It's impossible. Well, if it's not impossible, it'll look reeeaaly bad. Don't deface such a great car with a rubbish mod. Just MHO.
Even if you could get the outside look like a W220, you just can't change the inside. If ...

Even if you could get the outside look like a W220, you just can't change the inside. If you were going to do that, might as well get a real W220. That would save you the headache of this 'insane' project.
Ive seen this done to a car in the UK. They change the front end but the back end still is 100% W140. Just imagine - it looks like two cars welded together. It looks ridiculus, and stupidly wrong. kinda Michael Jackson-ish.

I would have to agree with the others here and say steer clear. We are not talking about a simple headlamp upgrade here, but complete body panels.

I've seen the ads for this in a 'Mecerdes Entusiast', a British Benz rag. It was in Barnes & Noble. Nice, glossy mag. The had ads to convert the W140 and and the SL coupe. According to site only in these pictures, the conversion APPEARED to be done so as to the only way I could tell at a glance was the A/B/C pillars. Only the passenger compartment and roofline could not/ would not be changed. Plus they did side-by-side comparisions of the real one and the conversion. I even showed my wife, who is the daily driver of our S-Class. We were both tripping, "whoa"! However, the immediate question out of both our mouths was, "WHY?" To achieve THAT amount of fit and finish (as pictured at least) from a kit, the thing would have to have cost $10,000 US, at the LEAST. And they did have the prices in pounds, but, even if I could remember what it was, I've never taken the time to learn the conversion, in typical US fashion :) We both agreed if you can trick that kind of loot, just go buy another. And who with that kind of money, already owning an authentic W140, would then build it into a bootleg Mercedes? Insanity is right.

Btw, that link didn't work for me, so I can't tell if this was the same kit or not. Sounds like it though.

conversion

Why?

I intend to keep my w140 100% stock. Don't mess with the best. Even the w220 is a downgrade in my humble opinion, it lacks the double pane glass.

Re: conversion

it lacks the double pane glass.

hehe thats what I always say... and everytime I look at another car my friends tease me by pulling out a ruler and checking the thickness of the side window glass on any other car I look at [:D]
My opinion: these "conversions" are stupid as hell and you end up just ruining the car. You want a W220? Sell the W140 and buy one. A conversion will just ruin a perfectly good W140. [xx(]
If your gonna do anything good to a 140 it'd be to take it to Brabus and let them improve it, not some tyro with a 220 body kit. Do they also make 140 conversions to the new Bimmer 7??? These guys are right, leave the real Benzes alone, if you want a tin can on wheels you need to go to a 220 forum, or better yet, a bimmer one.
Anyone interested for the conversion please check my web site www.gtmod.com. Conversion kit cost you USD2500

and if you want to feel thin and plastic, you could always try the new AMG V12 I did, ohhh!! bendy wings and things everthing plastic!!!![xx(]
ooh you got me thinking ...maybe i put a 911 whale tail on my w140 500sel
I'll be content with replacing the grill on my S500 with the V12 style.[:D]
