Here is what I am thinking, tell me if I am way off base.

My 88 560 sel has 350,000 miles on it. Was told when I bought it that the top end and tranny were rebult 80,000 miles ago. The car is in good condition and I do not feel the need to get rid of it. I think the timing chain could use being done. I am thinking that I am just going to just let it run its course and not spend the money, and when it breaks, put a rebuilt engine in?????? If the bottom end has that many miles on it, wouldn't that make sense? Where is a good place to get rebuilts and a cost? If anyone thinks otherwise, please let me know!! Thanks!

Well maintained engines have been known to run for a great many miles.

If your engine was rebuilt only 80k miles ago, it would be much cheaper to do the timing chain job (guides/tensioner) than look for a replacement engine with an unknown service history.

But it's your car...
