I have spent the last week and a half being burnt by various brokers out there who promise they can deliver my new to me 419. All the attachments are off it, it currently doesn't run but ran so it should be fine with the right wrenching hands on it.

I am trying to have it picked up in Royal, Arkansas 71968 and hoping to get it at least close to Missoula MT. I can have a friend pickup from there but he cannot do the long haul tow.

Any suggestions welcomed. Its not a beauty yet, but its my second 419 and i have fun plans for her once I do get her home.

thanks for any leads!

I used J & S Transportation out of Billings MT to move my new Ford Ranger from the dealers lot in Santa Clara CA to my home here in western SD. I put out feelers to about a dozen brokers and got ridiculously low quotes. I finally spoke with an independant owner operator and he told me that no one would take the load for what the brokers were quoting me. He said most truckers would decline the load because it is so hard to find a back-haul from our part of the country.

Anyway, J & S gave me a quote and guaranteed that the price wouldn't change. The next day they called to let me know they had a truck in the Bay Area of CA and would be loading the Ranger later that afternoon. 36 hours later I had my new Ranger. J & S does have their own trucks but they also use other companies to move vehicles. The guy that delivered Ranger had a Dodge dually and a two vehicle flat bed trailer. He could not speak a word of English and had to use his phone to translate what he needed to convey to me. But.....he got the job done and that all that mattered to me.

Amazing! Thank you for the suggestion and I agree that these brokers have no idea on price. its been all over and all seemed too cheap to be true. Wasted a week hunting down all those companies and they all came up short. I will give J&S a ring,. thanks!

I shipped my 1965 Unimog 404 twice without any issues. If you still need help after checking with J&S let us know and I will dig up the carrier I used and forward the info to you.

I am assuming your intent is to ship a NON-RUNNING Unimog. Your reference to " it currently doesn't run but ran so it should be fine with the right wrenching hands on it" You are not anticipating that the transporter is going to have to get the Unimog running? If that is your intent, it will make the process MUCH more difficult, if not impossible.

We find that dead truck transport takes your pool of transporters and drops it by at least 80-90% Check with Matt at Cascade Enterprises out of Wyoming as his company has hauled many Unimogs both running and not running over the years.

If you think the Unimog can easily be fixed to run/drive, you may want to hire a mobile mechanic to do that as the shipping savings for a runner is likely less than a couple hours of work by a local mobile mechanic.

Uship is a viable end user venue for transport, but you need to manage the listing yourself. Photos and accurate measurements. Let it run it's course as transporters will bid against each other, but the vultures try and get an immediate commitment at stupid money. Let it run at least 4-5 days. When answering questions, do not hesitate to ask the "carrier" exactly when they have someone to pickup. "We can get it scehdueld in the next 7-10 days for pickup" is simply a broker who wants to pull your listing off the market and try to rebook it. "I have a driver who can pickup Tuesday morning and has a stepdeck with winch...." Bingo, legit. Gone are the days of $2 mile for a dedicated stepdeck that can hold 3 x SEEs.

Cheers,

Scott

Hey Scott,
I am experiencing just how brutal the u-ship/broker world truly is. Its my first time shipping a truck and probably the last with this in mind.

If the truck ran I would drive it, drove my other SEE home 1400 miles, with all attachements, but sadly it is non op and I do not expect anyone to get it going where it sits. just winch it up on a trailer and go north. The truck ran and has been sitting so I am sure it is similar to my other 2 OM352 where some love will make it run again, but my quotes currently operating or non op arent any different, granted only promises of "in the next 7 business days" are on the market.

I found one company that is going to schedule a driver so we shall see what happens, but I appreciate your tactics on U-Ship, certainly helpful for a firstimer.

thanks

I've used UShip a few times now. My experience with that is the low bidder will get the job, but then drag the feet and make excuses until you start talking about paying more to get it done. They like to delay it out in hopes of getting more on the truck or a load for the return drive to make it more profitable. I like to go with the mid range bidders and drivers that are nearby.

I will say, that when shipping my box truck, I did a pre trip to get it running with a new starter, battery, keys, fuel and filters to make it easier for the shippers. I went through 3 drivers with uship before I found one that was good enough to get it loaded properly

Thanks for your insight, it is truly helpful to hear others stories on shipping trucks. Who would have thought it was this hard to go from A-B when wanting to pay a decent amount. I do wish the truck ran, but out of options on that one this time around. I do see how it would help.

thank you for your note, very much appreciated.

Keep in mind that the trailer (and tow vehicle) needs to be stout enough to handle the weight, and low enough for the height. That rules out many of the typical pickup/car trailer transporters.

If I wasn't way too busy with other stuff, I could haul it for you (and likely get it started, too), but couldn't accept any payment. I can total up to 39,000 lbs., but not do anything commercial.

In your case I'd try finding someone with a tractor and a lowboy that has room to spare on the trailer, combining loads for at least part of the trip.

I was not aware that the truck does not run when I mentioned I had used a shipper for my mog, but here is the info. Contact [email protected]. They are out of Florida. (561) 291-9766.

I relocated a few years back and my 404 was mid restoration. It was in pieces. I just loaded all the parts into a Penske and through the chassis on a car hauler and drove it cross country. Total cost including fuel was <$1000. But you have to have time to be the loader and driver.

id drive this in a heart beat. If I had a truck. If I had a trailer. Hard to find a rentable trailer and truck that can haul 10k lbs.

What does it weigh as it sits? I know a 419 weighs a lot more than a 404. The car hauler has a 5000 lb capacity. If you can get your truck down to that then you’ll be fine. Whatever you take off can be placed in the box truck.

Someone with more knowledge could probably be more accurate. My best guess from research is 7-9000 lbs. So it might be hard to strip it down.

Yeah, it will be tough to strip that much weight off. If you are willing to drive it yourself, I would go to Penske. You can rent some heavy equipment from them. I know they have non-CDL flatbeds with a 10k pound capacity. It would be a b!tch to get the truck up that high and it may exceed your desired overall height. You could also see what sort of trailers they have. They frequently have eaten that is not listed on their website.

Another option is to find some private haul company. Lots of people with trucks and trailers are pimping themselves out on Craigslist.

A third option is to buy the heavy equipment trailer. You can get a “well worn” trailer for $5k ish. Probably about what you would end up paying for a commercial delivery. Sell the trailer in MT to recoup some skrilla, or keep it.

Thank you for your options. Penske route is a no go bc of the weight, private haulers are what i have been working on for the last two weeks so we shall see.

I am going to change the route to North Dakota, 1K miles straight north should be easier to find someone who can fit me on their existing route. then i will pick it up in ND myself with a friend. 2K + 2K is just a bit much to ask a friend to help, so doing 1K + 1K instead. Not sure this will work, but a man can die trying.

much appreciated for all the options. if anyone knows anyone driving south to north around the dakotas feel free to chime in.

It would appear you need to find an open flatbed, since the height of the vehicle can't be accommodated by any car hauler we've seen. Yes, availability of back-hauls would also be a concern. Might even be a candidate for the TV show where independents bid on odd loads? Certainly qualifies as "odd and interesting"! HTH
