Tranny Probs.

What year is your 280? There are two different Transmissions for the C280 depending on the year.

C as in 220:thumbsup:

This is trivial, but I had that once and finally noticed I was pulling the shifter to the left when I pulled it back into D. It was in 4th instead.

ahhh mine is a 97 with the 5 sp transmission.... D and 4 are parallel and 3 is back from 4.

No matter what, take a peek at the fluid. The level first and if it doesn't look good, get it changed. Mine was a little erratic, especially when cold, until I drained the coffee colored old fluid out and replaced it and the filter.

wait if it is teh 5 speed, i think then its supposed to shift at different times, it has this computer programme on it that tells it to shift accordingly with the driver, just step on the accelrator once, and it will shift differently. it is a rather eclectic gearbox, im sure its fine.

His car is a 1995... therefore... no electronic 5 speed transmission.

And at 75-80 you will be at about 3000 RPM... cruising at 60-65 you should be at 2500-2700 RPM... unless things are different for the C280's... I remember my 300CE was at 3k while doing 80mph

I don't know what to tell ya... if you want piece of mind maybe drive another 95 C280 from a lot or private party selling one and see how it acts.

If you want a good shop to go to... I take mine to MBI Motors on Hawthorne... I only let them and Rasmussen touch my car.

If you really want to know, can't you look up the gear ratio and final drive ratio to calculate what it should be and then compare?

That's what I hit/hold at 80.

You are aware that you start out in second gear right?

C280... good point that I had forgotten about since having the 5-speed tranny... so you will only really go through 2 gear changes... 2>3 and 3>4... unless you drop your shifter into 1 at a stop light then back to D (while still stopped) and you will start in 1st.

Revs @ 75 mph

This brings up a question... I think ours runs around 3200 @ 75mph. Do the 280's have the same rear end as the 220's?

C as in 220:thumbsup:

Look at the tech data at the back of the owners manual, it may have the gear ratio for both models.

Adjusting the bowden cable also has an effect on rpms/mph I have found as well.

Rear end ratios

No Joy on finding the rear end (Differential) ratios. The owners manual and the Haynes have all kinds of stuff on the Engines but not too much on Trannys or Diffs.

Oh well, it won't get me there any faster if I know or not.:D

It reminds me I should probably change the Fluid though...
