That particular space was used by Mercedes for two distinct switches, but they don't look like the one in the picture. First, the european cars had a headlight beam adjuster that would aim the beams lower whenever there was a lot of weight in the rear. Second, as an option on the 2.5-16 and on the two EVO cars, there was a suspension height adjuster.

The more I thought about it - does it turn on some underbody LEDs/Neons? Or it might be wired to a "euro" fog taillight (would be bulb 5 on the left side)

Doesn't "Q" always put the ejector seat button in the shifter knob? [:D]

That's a good point and well presented.[:p]

On a serious note though, what does the plaque above the vent say?

Maybe it's a clue (Sherlock Holmes mode now).

In the North American cars, that's the "Unleaded Fuel Only" sticker . . . made obsolete by the banning of leaded fuels so many years ago.

I have like 3 different buttons that a previous owner installed in my car. Traced them back and found...well...NOTHING! [:D]

Actually, there's a Viper security system wired in, but it doesn't work. I WISH I could get a new remote for that puppy and wire it back up. Any ideas?
