I just made another apt for next week on something I posted a while agao that they dealer can t find. I ll post it again. 2010 E 550, 5K miles. After it warms up at idle only, I get a clacking type knock that you can hear from outside the car. Dealer claims they couldn t hear anything but after drivng it another month or two it s driving me crazy. I can t pin point the location but am hoping it s a belt pully or something other than the internal engine. I ve tried the old srewdriver stethascope(sp) thing in an attempt to locate the sound. (Thats an old school trick that some may know) any thoughts????

I just noticed that I might have the EXACT same problem on my 350.

I noticed it outside of the car, at idle (hopefully it doesn't happen while driving.

Sounds like a hooptie with that "clack"!

maybe it s normal. don t forget we have different engines , so could it normal? or maybe it s just the white ones.

Describing mechanical sounds is always such a difficult task, and makes it nearly impossible to offer diagnotic help. (ie. what is "Sounds like Hooptie with that Clack"?)

Since it sounds like you can clearly hear it from outside... why not take a video or sound clip and either post it, or take it to your dealer? Just like a photo is worth 10,000 words... so are auditory cues....

I've seen several folks post their Sound problems as a YouTube Video, so you may want to give that a go...

Results/ Good news. The slight knocking sound I sometimes hear seems to be normal. I went to the dealer for the second time and insisted on speaking with the tech to pin point the sound. We took the car around back(were it was quieter) and I pointed out the sound. Tech said lets see what another E550 sounds like. There was another one right behind me in service so we fired that one up with the hood opens and sure enough had the same sound. Tech thought it was just the sounds of the engine. He stated alot of the covers and sound deadening technology are used but maybe due to lighter castings the sound can sometimes be heard and not to worry about it. He also pointed out several other sounds that can be heard and are commonly reported. Very informative.

at least you are understanding. alot of customers arent and will not accept the fact that a certain noise is normal. they will even trade the car in cause of it.

Also, Kudos for being firm and making them PROVE their hypothesis. There is nothing like having someone show you the exact same car, with the exact same symptoms, to convince you.

Most of the Techs I know are happy to bring the customer back and show them the problem at hand. I think most folks (esp. in the Benz Realm) don't care much about it (thus, the statistic-- "only 2 to 4% of Mercedes Owners perform their own maintenance"), and take the Service "Face-Man" at his word.

The exhaust and car in general are so quiet that you can hear everything working. I do wish it had a bit more exhaust sound like an AMG. For a big V8 it s too quiet. That being said I am sure they made it that way for the majority...
