W124 manual gearboxes: which is which?

Hi there

I want to know, in simple terms, how the manual gearboxes of the W124 series differ from each other. Can I, for instance, fit the manual gearbox from a 200E to the 260E? There are so many different gearboxes, and I need to replace mine :crybaby2: with the correct unit (1988 230E). What are the differences, how do I tell them apart (numbers, shift patterns, visible characteristics...)?

Thank you for your help.

P.S.

I'm not quite clued-up with the engine numbers...

Since I'm asking, what are the ratios on the different 'boxes?

MB calls you car the W124 series. Scroll down from this general forum until you see the sedans section, look for the W124 forum, and ask your questions there. You have a better chance of getting the other actual owner's attention there. Good luck and welcome to BW.
