 Hi All,

I have a 2000 S500 that I cannot get the trunk to open, with neither the remote nor the manual key above the licence plate. The trunk release and remote were working fine until, one day, stupid me while taking trash to the dumpster I kind of forced the trunk down on the trash. When I got to the dumpster and pushed the trunk release button on the driver side door, I could hear the trunk trying to open buit it never did. I kept trying and eventually the red light on the trunk release switch went off. Is it possible that I blew the fuse with my multiple attempts to open it? Also, when I stick the manual key in the back above the license plate and turn it 1/4 and push in (up) the trunk doesnt open;the windows just roll down and the doors unlock. I've searched all of the forums and have not found a fix yet. Someone please help!! I have trash in the trunk it it's starting to smell! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks im advance.

Try pushing down instead of up when trying to open. Their might be to much presure on the lock that is holding it closed.

Push down and then hit the unlock. When you hear the click let it go.

Good luck!

To add to Gabby's suggestion you will probably have to use pliers when turning the manual key as well, it turns farther than you think as it is against a spring mechanism which you need to turn it past. And it if has not been lubed recently it will be very sticky from lack of use. This lock cylinder is also "backwards" and to open the trunk you turn it to the left (counter clockwise) and it does not push up... just turn it left is all just FYI...

Would also hold down on the trunk lid while turning or get an assistant to relieve some of the tension off the locking mechanism.

My Trunk has been locked for 8 months AFTER WORKING PERFECTLY FINE and I just got it opened today with the help of a Locksmith. Everyone kept telling me to go to the dealer and I finally had a locksmith that wasn't afraid to touch it. I own a 99 E320 and the key would not work in neither would the cylinder when I pushed it in to loosen the latch to open the trunk. Also the Trunk Latch inside the car did not work. So the LOCKSMITH buy put these two blood pressure cuff looking things under the bottom of the trunk and pumped them up and my trunk popped right open after 8 months. He then inspected my locks and said I need to replace the cylinder and Trunk Lock. It looks like when I pushed the cylinder it to open the trunk like normally it was not connecting to the internal latch to release the trunk. I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE A LOCKSMITH COME AND PUT THE TWO INFLATABLE BLOOD PRESSURE CUFF LOOKING THINGS(don't know what they're called) UNDER WHERE THE KEYHOLE IS(where trunk closes) AND THEN PUMP THEM WITH AIR after he gets it under the slight opening. I BET THAT WILL DO THE TRICK.. YOUR TRUNK IS JUST LIKE MINE.Anyway good luck and let me know if you have any questions!!!!

Put the key in turn the key, while holding the key in the turned position (left), press the key and lock directly up, it will open.

If it doesn't work use your other left, still hold it and press the key AND lock directly up.

Sorry, you are posting incorrect information ... you do not need to press this lock cylinder in .... you turn it to the left COMPLETLEY and the lid will release.

sounds like what others have said, there is too much pressure on the trunk lid, if you are using the key make sure to have someone put downward pressure on the lid itself while you try to unlock it.

First, I'm quite sure that posting essentially the same question twice in 5 minutes will get you nowhere fast, brads. Post once, wait a few hours, and USUALLY someone who knows will answer your question.

With regards to whether or not to push in while turning the key in the manual trunk lock, I disagree with everyone that says you need to do this. When my CPS failed recently and someone (my stupid friend whose garage this vehicle is being kept in while worked on) kept trying to start the car and ran the battery dead, the remote wouldn't work any more and neither would the release button in my 2001 S600. After reading through these forums, I discovered that pushing in on the lock while turning actually PREVENTS the lock from releasing, since this is a method used to make sure that anyone trying to get into the trunk with the VALET KEY gets too frustrated to actually succeed, unless he knows EXACTLY what he is doing.

Moral of the story: turn the valet key in the trunk manual lock to the 10 o'clock position (yes, upside down) WITHOUT pushing in on the lock cylinder. If the trunk's locking mechanism/latch aren't messed up, the trunk WILL open, guaranteed. BUT: ONLY ONCE PER BATTERY CHARGE/CYCLE! Found this out the hard way, too!!!

After reading this thread, I think it's safe to say I shouldn't use my S class to dispose of bodies and to stick with my truck for corpse removal.

I have the same problem and about gave up on getting the trunk open with the manual key. Then I saw your post and with WD40 land pliers the key socket freed up and the trunk opened! Now to fix the pump. Thank you for saving the day.
