Hi All,

This questions is regarding my 1994 C280 M104 with 722.4xx transmission, 200,000 kms. The transmission has started to act funny - it is shifting into higher gears sooner than usual. The 2-3 and 3-4 shifts feel a bit more abrupt and harsh (it used be so smooth you'd barely know you were shifting). And I have lost the kickdown funciton when flooring the gas pedal.

Here is what I know so far:

-Fluid level is proper, clean and no burnt smell. Was replaced 15,000 kms ago with fresh filter.
-The transmission shifts properly when using the shift lever to move it through the shift detents - 2-3, 3-4 both shift without any sort of harshness or delay, both up shift and down shift.
-The car downshifts on its own without problem so when I pull away from a light I've got 1st gear back - no clunking or other odd sensations.

I'm really in the dark when it comes to transmissions. Does this sound like an internal transmission issue or is it more likely either an adjustement or some sort of failed vaccum control?

Any help would be appreciated - I know it is a W202 question but I think the more experienced hands reside in this forum.

Before doing anything else, check that the control pressure cable is connected and adjusted correctly. This goes from the throttle linkage to the tranny, and should have just about zero slack at idle. Next, verify that the vacuum modulator (at the trans) has the vacuum hose connected, and you can feel vacuum at idle. If it does, try driving the car with the hose disconnected. It should shift very harshly. If it made no difference, replace the modulator.
Your kickdown switch is under the gas pedal - cheap and easy to replace - they break all the time.
Those are your easy fixes.

Thanks Hirnbeiss, I just checked the control pressure cable and there is a tremendous amount of slack in the flexible section - adjusting the nut makes no difference in the amount of slack and does nothing to change the alignment between the two adjustment arrows.

Does this mean the cable has broken? This is a $240 part so I want to make sure I'm right before I commit.

Thank you!

Just to close the loop on this thread - replacing the control pressure cable (also called a Bowden cable) restored the transmission to normal operation. The cable itself had broken.
