Hey guys,

While I was changing the brake pads on my '88 560SL, I broke a bolt on my calipers, and now I need to extract and replace it. Problem is, after searching for days, I cannot for the life of me identify this bolt. Can anyone help? It's not the actual "caliper bolt"—it's one of these four bolts, circled in the photo below:

And here's the bolt I broke—about 2/3 of it is still inside the caliper:

I wouldn't ask if I hadn't already poured days into trying to find this on here and across the web, gone to AutoZone searching for one, etc. Thanks in advance, y'all!

Im not sure these are it, but you might want to ask the dealer if the bolts are similar from 560sel and 560sl, sometimes they share similar.

Looks like a regular 8mm bolt. Do you have one of the other ones out? Can you measure the length. Can you post a picture of the head?

Thanks a ton for weighing in, y'all. Roncallo: I don't have one of the other ones out yet. I'd measure the length of the broken bolt, but it wouldn't tell me much—not sure of the length of the portion that's broken inside the caliper. For now, here's a photo of the head. Couldn't glean anything from it myself:

And yep, you got it, classictile—it's one of four bolts that hold the calipers together. I loosened them to help me get my old, stuck brake pad out, which, in retrospect, was a mistake 🙃

Just make sure you replace it with a 10.9 strength bolt.
This is my 560SL front caliper. I believe that bolt says 11.9. I never heard of an 11.9 and there are arguments on the web about weather they exist or not. So I vote 12.9. Also the bolts go right threw to the other side so ~ 65mm length. Both Mcmaster and Bell Metric only sell 12.9 8M bolts up to 60mm in fully threaded configuration. 60mm should be fine unless the hole is pocketed at the parting seam.

Belmetric is cheeper: Hex Bolts 12.9 Full M8X1.25 Coarse DIN 933

Even if you get the remaining bolts (and pieces) out will you be able to reuse the gasket between the halves or find another? May be worth looking into rebuilt calipers. Beware of clone calipers that are not rebuilt ATE/Mercedes hardware.
