I have just bought my second Merc a 300D 1993 163000 miles and there is smoke coming from the dip stick ,oil filler cap and engine breather . the car starts 1st time every time and the engine sounds sweet.and runs smooth.there is a bit of smoke coming from the tail pipe . please help:bowdown:

I think you're fine. I could never understand why anyone buying a W123 or W124 diesel would ever complain about smoke, oil drips, engine clatter, or poor performance. Doesn't a certain amount of that come with the territory? Isn't the "joy" of diesel ownership related to keeping all that to an acceptable minimum? If it runs 'sweet' and doesn't have dogs chasing you down the street (catching you on occasion) or old ladies yelling at you out their windows, I'd say you're right about in the middle of the curve.

Thanks, that makes me fill better , it is the 1st diesel merc i have owned and I thou rt the engine was nakerd

It sounds like you have a small bit of blow by. Try a can of engine honey and see if that helps the cc smoke.

what is blow by ?. is it crank case pressure

Yes the piston rings are getting worn and allowing pressure by. Its time for rebuild if you mess with it. If you leave it alone it may run forever who knows.
