I recently am looking at a 1997 Mercedes e 420. The battery was replaced and is having a hard time starting. It wants to but the fans move in front. Everything comes on. The car has been sitting for awhile. I'm purchasing this car for my son. What are some recommendations. Mine obviously is ti get the car running.

Did you purchase the car already? Unless you like to work on cars.........pass on it. Get something from 2000 on.

Sounds like a done deal on the purchase, correct?

IF SO, borrow a decent scanner, scan and post any error codes.

At this early stage, could be a plethora of issues. You will not know - you have to got thru a check list of things - easiest to more difficult checks for a DIYer. Otherwise, you need to now find a good, honest reliable indie nearby that knows how to work on MBs.

based on my experience... identical year and model benz, sat for a year and a half, you should do the basic systems check. Check and possibly replace spark plugs, fuel regulator, fuel filter, maybe the pump. Definitely check for dry rotted, cracked or disconnected vacuum lines. Replace/reconnect if any are found. Clean the MAF. I did all those things (except replace the fuel pump) and my car runs great with no codes. BTW car should cost less than $1500 based on your description...
