I drive a 1995 s280 with a 2.8 straight six and have just blown the diff (or think so anyway)
Now this is where you knowledgable and kind hearted chaps come in
1 Now have i blown my diff ?
The car was sitting at the lights waiting for them to change to green which they duly did and when i went to set of there was an almighty bang from the back of the car
Under the car looking at the diff etc i have the prop shaft spinning and 1 driveshaft also spinning but obviously no drive forwards
2 Is there any other car in the mercedes range that uses a diff which i can replace my diff with short term as i will not get a s class diff in time to fit it before xmas
My local scrapyard /vehicle dismantlers has 80s and 90s c class e class etc in( if they fit) so could get 1 for pennies and then get the proper diff later when all the snow has gone and deliveries are back to normal after the xmas rush

Any advice and help appreciated
Cheers Ian

I very much doubt a diff from a smaller car would fit, but if you need one fairly quickly, give Carl a bell a W140.co.uk

Carl is my back up for a diff but the postage system in the uk is seriously messed up at the moment due to the snow so if an e class diesel or any of the cars in the scrappy that has a 2.8 motor that would fit that would get me back on the road tomorrow rather than weeks time
My car is sitting 2 miles from home at the moment with the hazards on waiting for a mate to come and tow me home !!:(

I know i'm clutching at straws but i was hoping the diff was the same in the e class and they just made the driveshafts a different length to suit the bodyshell etc and maybe used the same cv joints too to save money
Okay the gearing could be different but i can live with that for now

Well i've got the car home and had a look underneath and the diff isn't knackered after all it would appear i have ONLY snapped a driveshaft:)
Now i just need to find another drive shaft and get it posted to me so it arrives before xmas
