If it aint broke dont fix it, learnt that the hard way today!

I set about trying to clean the cap and rotor today because of rough idle. So I took each of the caps off and scraped the green stuff off as much as I could and used a soft brush to get rid of the rest.

I then opened the right rotors, gave that a quick clean, and very lightly sanded the contact on the rotor.

Tried to open the left rotor but one of the screws has rusted and as I tried to turn it the top bit just fell off (its a beru rotor and the screws are like soft material). And now i guess theres no way I can get that screw out?

I then put everything back together and started it up, seemed a little rough to start with, then when accelerating sounded even rougher and some noise was coming from the left cap and rotor (the rotor which I couldnt open due to screw falling off). Then on idle, it slowly it cut off. I started again and at idle cut off again. 3rd time and now dosent even start up, no sign of it!

Sorry for long explanation, can anyone help?

If you are carefull you can use and extractor bit to remove the broken bolt.

I learned the same lesson, cleaned my ETA and replaced a hose on it that was cracked and now I have limp mode and ASR... lol but if it was always really easy, then mechanics would lose their jobs.

good luck

Take the rotor off and get the broken bolt out, be patient and make sure you prick punch it in the center before drilling it out..you must of screwed the cap and rotor up trying to start it, the other thing is while your in there you should replace the seal behind the rotor, not a big deal to do..good luck!!

Sorry getting confused, what exactly is causing this? Do I need new cap and rotors, or is it that bolt causing the issue?
The rotor must of moved and damaged itself and or the cap, now its not contacting correctly. I would say replace them both and dont break any more of the screws. tighten alittle before you try removing them and if they still feel tight, tighten and losen a little at a time untill it comes out.

I use CLR on that stuff before I even put a tool to it.

Quick update, I replaced the right side cap and rotor.
Now to get this left rotor out, looks like I've got no other choice but to drill through the middle of the rotor and try get that 5mm bolt out?
Could anyone give me any guidance on how to drill through, what kind of drill peice to use?

As you can see from the picture, I've got the rightmost bolt out, the top one's head is totally gone and the leftmost head is messed up and whenever I try loosen it it just slips.

Thanks!!

First centre pop the centre of the broken bolt and start with the smalest dril and take you time, you dont want to make things worse and snap a drill in the hole, patience patience and more patience. slowly increase th esize of the drill. The bolt may get to the point where it collapses so you can pull it out

the female allen bolt, I would drill a little deeper and try a reverse tap or easy out to take it out.

Allen bolts tend to be made of harder steel than normal bolts

good luck take your time.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Just giving a quick update on it, just incase someone might be in the same situation later on.

Drilled a hole about less than half the diameter right through the middle of each of the bolts. Then thought of a makeshift idea of getting them out, I got a screw just thick enough that I could screw it in half way through the bolt. At this point was pretty stuck in the bolts, then just screwed anticlock wise and they came out!

The seal was in very bad condition, had a crack in it (not sure if drilling caused it) this picture was of it when I just took the broken piece out,. Looks like I need new seals and O-Rings, after replacing everything hopefully should sort out my rough idle!
