i recently purchased a 97 e420 150k for parts. it was a repo at a dealership in ATL. It would crank over but wouldnt start, no fuel pressure at fuel rail...after looking the car over and reading tons of posts on this site i figured out the fpump was bad. replaced with a $20 used one from local pik a part. she fired right up and runs great! however when shifting out of park it feels like there is some play in the linkage and it goes into reverse while indicator is at N. then when shifting to D it clicks but never goes into gear. I'm still debating on parting it out or trying to fix it. I have a 00 E320 and a 99 E430 that could use some parts.

-It will back up all day and trans seems fine, but it wont go forward!

Welcome. Please click user cp and edit details to add your vehicle and location to your profile, it's often useful information when you're seeking assistance.

Have you read through the stickies about the transmission? If not please do so, and in fact read through the other topics because about 90% of the stuff you'll need is already there.

It could very well simply be the shifter module, either dirty contacts, moisture, etc. The transmission in your car is electo-mechanical, when you stick it in gear the shifter module is actually sending a signal to the TCM, which then communicates with the transmission. You might also have codes stored in the TCM which could prevent it from operating normally. If you have a good-enough code reader you can pull codes and see if any transmission-related ones show up, if not pull the shifter module and check it out, and you may as well replace the shifter bushing to make sure that's aligning properly.

Good luck.

it was the bushings. i just pulled the console and the bushing under the shifter was gone. i went to my local benz dealer and got it for $3.47. it helped a lot but im afraid the other bushing is bad too...still got a clunking sound and its hard to shift. The good thing is that it goes into Drive now and the ol gal runs and drives great.
