My wife has wanted an 107 since she saw a new one on display in a mall in the 1980s... now we have one!

Title says 155k, broken odo says 154k. No rust or previous rust repairs that I could see. Engine seems to run OK, transmission seems to shift OK, but lots of things broken. Bought for $4,500. No service history.

My only previous mechanical experience was replacing broken Jeep window motors, motorized antennas, etc. but I am eager to learn and start a new hobby!

I only have access to the car for three months of each year so I will have to research and buy as many parts as I can in advance, where possible.

List of things to do, in no particular order:


  1. Replace speedo cable (needle bounce)
  2. Fix odometer
  3. Oil change
  4. Check trans fluid
  5. Check timing chain and guides
  6. Check drains
  7. Install trunk lock
  8. Install new passenger-side lock
  9. Fix central locking
  10. Fix passenger-side mirror
  11. Fix fuel smell
  12. Investigate oil leak
  13. Replace ignition coil (has hole in side)
  14. Fix clock
  15. Fix shifter linkage – bushings?
  16. Fix blower
  17. Fix A/C?
  18. Fix heat?
  19. Fix difficult warm start
  20. Change spark plugs, cables and distributor cap
  21. Replace driver's seatbelt
  22. Get new cargo area base
  23. Fix rattle in driver-side door - loose glass?
  24. Lubricate door locks
  25. Replace seat chrome sides
  26. New floor mats
  27. Replace passenger-side console side panel
  28. Fix cracks in dashboard
  29. Replace trunk seal
  30. Replace door seals
  31. Replace soft top, or fix bad patches
  32. Check brake fluid
  33. Replace visor brackets
  34. Check power steering fluid

You can find many of the parts you need on ebay. There are also several recommendations and links on this forum about where to source parts. I, too would start with the fuel smell. Look for leaks in the system, most likely in the back. When I first bought my 74, it had a fuel smell. replaced fuel pumps and filter. haven't had a gas smell since. If it was me, I would replace the soft top, as it's 1 of the things people look at when buying a convertible.

Re the fuel smell. Check under the hood first. The 74 model is a Djet (has Djetronic fuel injection system). Check for fuel leaks in the fuel distribution system. The short hoses that connect the metal tubing (we call them rails) to the injectors are prone to leaks. Leaks around the engine can result in fires! Unless it's already been done, I would buy new fuel injection hose (It is 7.5mm ID) as one of the first jobs. This along with other safety items like brakes & seatbelts. Cosmetic items can come later!

If you look in the stickies, you will find one called EGV107. That covers all 107s.
In there, there are also sections on Djetronics. (especially section 07.4 and 07.5). There are also links to on-line manuals. I tend to use this one (which is not in stickies): Model 107 Maintenance Manual Index

You will also want to get access to the Mercedes epc (electronic parts catalog). Best way it seems is to check eBay for auctions for Mercedes WIS/EPC . WIS is only for later cars, but WIS covers all Mercedes.

Welcome to the forum!

When I met my wife (back in '88, when she was at college) she discovered I spent most of my free time under the hood or underneath a collection of old jalopies.

I asked her what her dream car was - an SL Roadster. 30 years later we're still together, and the '76 450SL is getting close to finished....

It's great when your SO shares the hobby - hope you both enjoy the car!

PS Agree with everyone else - fix the fuel leak first, but I say then drive it a little to make sure you've not missed anything serious. Also, definitely buy an EPC DVD plus the service manuals (paper or electronic) off ebay - you'll need them..

PPS How on earth does a coil get a hole in it - and work?!

Does the 74 have a separate clock in the center of the dash? There are instructions on how to repair them in stickies, I think. If not, I am sure I have somewhere here. It's usually a fusible link that has blown. Fix is quite easy.

Funnily enough, I just brought my SL out from it's winter storage spot. When I reconnected the clock, it didn't run! Will check main fuse first.

The clock is in the instrument cluster. It makes a very loud ticking noise but no hand movement. Yes, low priority but I figured I would do the speedo cable, odo gears and clock all at the same time.

The separate clocks on the earlier 107s are actually mechanical but with an electric winder. The winder is what usually fails, but can be fixed. I am not sure about the clocks integrated with the cluster, but suspect they might be quartz electrical.

There is a company in Canada that fixes all types of problems. I think the owner may actually own a 107. https://www.mbcluster.com/ Check the Media tab.

I would move the fluid check.change to near the top of the list.
Power steering fluid flush and new filter, brake fluid flush, differential and transmission flush, & etc.
Replace all the rubber hoses in the fuel system, after 40+ years they need to be switched.
'74 is the last year of solid lifters so every once in a while you will need to adjust the valves.



#1 thing to remeber -- BE VERY CAREFUL AROUND THE D-JET ELECTRICS. The connectors are all very brittle and hard to get.
A D-Jet in good tune is a joy to drive, couple bad connectors and not so much...

Oh and tires, check the data code on the tires and replace if they are not from this decade.

I got my 72 Djet out of storage yesterday. Been sitting since last November. Fired right up. Let it idle why I moved the other cars around. It at first idled at just over 1000rpm and then settled down nicely to about 700rpm. Took it for a drive until it reached full temperature. Ran perfectly. When I got back, opened hood to check for any leaks. Everything looked good. Engine just purring with smooth idle.

Looks like building a new harness is a good idea - something I can work on for the months when I don't have access to the car. Also perhaps refurbishing the cluster. :)

After reading about oil changes I think I may just take it to an indy for fluid changes. Not keen on DIYing the messy stuff.

Get an extractor..

I use mine to get the oil out of the engine, then I go under and change the filter and open the "huge" drain plug to get any residual oil out. It is a lot cleaner than trying to deal with the gusher of oil that comes out of the drain hole!

Fast forward to now and she is excited to get this car. She loves Mercedes. I start to research it and find the fuel injection system was made by Bosch. Hmmm... mid-70s...
German car... third-party fuel injection system... what are the chances...

Yep! Her hated VW used the same Bosch Djet system! :big laugh:
