heat shield above catalysator

The heat shield above the exhaust pipe/catalysator (whats the term in english?) was completely loose just resting on top of the pipe and it made a really bad noise / shaking

So I went under the car trying to fix it back in place but was impossible due to all the rust so I simply removed it altogether. Im now wondering if it was smart to do, what purpose does it have? To protect some parts under the car, or just to spread the heat evenly (like when parking in grass etc)?

This is a common problem due to a really bad design. MB put out an advisory on it and one of its suggestions is for the MB tech to hand fashion a bracket to stick up there which will then hold the shield up/above the exhaust. My MB dealer lowered the exhaust and removed the shield.
