The heat shield above the exhaust pipe/catalysator (whats the term in english?) was completely loose just resting on top of the pipe and it made a really bad noise / shaking

So I went under the car trying to fix it back in place but was impossible due to all the rust so I simply removed it altogether. Im now wondering if it was smart to do, what purpose does it have? To protect some parts under the car, or just to spread the heat evenly (like when parking in grass etc)?

To disapate the heat away from the underbody, I would suggest getting a replacement shield. You may want a muffler shop to do that one. B

This is a common problem due to a really bad design. MB put out an advisory on it and one of its suggestions is for the MB tech to hand fashion a bracket to stick up there which will then hold the shield up/above the exhaust. My MB dealer lowered the exhaust and removed the shield.

So I probably should put it back then. The problem is not the shield as much as the screws holding the bolts in place, they have almost rusted clean trough.. will need to find a way to secure it in position.

xvvvz: So you have been driving around without the shield? How long, any problems? Did the dealer say it was totally safe without the shield?
